Question about Transfer Switches

I am wiring up a cam switch in my generator compartment so I can plug one leg into the pedestal and run my 2d AC while I am using hook-ups. But now I'm thinking about the transfer switch in the coach. Is its operation somehow bifurcated so that it will energize a 30 amp leg from the pedestal and a 20 amp leg from the generator (really also the pedestal) at the same time? I thought it was supposed to prevent that kind of thing. Thanks for your help.

  • This RVsafepower switch will allow one to run an additional appliance via the 20 amp outlet at the pedestal. It works with GFI outlets and standard outlets.
I own one and it is a game changer. I do not hesitate to use my 50 amp RV on 30 amp sites. I know I can always use both A/C's
    RVsafepower Transfer switch
  • That provides isolation, as long as it is a complete breakout, total isolation hot neutral and ground from AC to plug to external shore power
  • If your generator has two circuit breakers for the AC power, then you can break out the circuit that feeds one of the A/C's, running the generator side to a new duplex outlet and the load side to a 20 amp plug. In normal use, the plugs goes in the outlet. To power the A/C from a separate source, connect the plug to a heavy duty extension cord plugged into the site's 20 amp outlet.

I have a 50 amp RV that is two 120 volt "legs" with a common neutral. The transfer switch "Transfers" 3 lines, HOT, HOT and Neutral

Now I also have a "Cheater box" this is a device with two 120 volt plugs (TT-30s) and a 50 amp outlet.. I can plug it into two different outlets .. I do not recommend these as there are only a very few places where I can use it. It is also a GFCI tester.. if you use it and one or both of the outlets are GFCI, it WILL Trip the GFCI if it is working.

Now I've studied the wiring for 30 amp Transfer Switches (Intellatech models)

30 amp RV's have only one 120 volt system, normally, A hot and a Neutral

But when you fire up the generator,, It transfers the MAIN breaker box to the generator's 30 amp breaker (If properly wired) and one air conditioner to the Genrator's 20 amp breaker.

This sounds like what you are trying to do.
  • Thanks, I appreciate the advice. It looks like I'll have to stick with my window AC unit.
  • No you
Can not use generator and shore power
Unless to want to rewire the second a/C from the unit all the way to and external cord for the a/C unit
    Total separation

Unless can write a break out plug from second a.c. To 20 amp shore
If the RV is also using shore power

    But not generator and shore

I think you are trying to use one a.c. From 20 amp shore and one from generator, where no 30 amp RV pedestal exists

    The answer is NO !

    It's NOT safe
  • Yes, only one AC at a time can be run while on shore power.

I was going to plug the 20 amp leg into the 20 amp GFCI at the pedestal. The cam switch switches between the 20 amp hot wire from the generator and the hot wire plugged into the pedestal. The 30 amp leg is not changed. I started this project based on the recommendations of some other forum members that said they had done the same thing but I know that is risky. Will it work if I separate out the neutrals and include them on the cam switch?
  • If you are planning on plugging into a 20 amp GFI I believe it will just trip due to the shared ground and neutral bond. Or will you plug into a 50 amp connector?

I assume one air only works on the 30 amp utility power and both airs will run from the generator?
  • No.
    That's two different power sources
And requires two total separated isolated sets of wiring with No common connections

Use two isolated cords from pedestal

    Or use the generator only
  • Transfer switch is only supposed to ensure coach is only connected to either shore or generator, never both.
