Question on Wiring Solar Panels with Power Inverter

I have an old 21' prowler travel trailer that is on a permanent site.
I am going to install 2-100 watt solar panels which goes to the charge controller then to the battery bank. I am also going to install a Xantrex Prowatt SW 1000 pure sine inverter, my question is,is it ok to wire that directly to the battery bank? Will there be any power interference between the solar & inverter? I'm new to this off grid power and want to make sure I'm doing it right. Thanks in advance for any comments!

Dave.

  • Good to go x2!
FWIW, I have a Xantrex Prowatt 1000 connected to multiple batteries and also, 235 W of solar. The Xantrex is a great little inverter, perfectly silent and handles a lot of AC load.

Good luck with your Renogy panels. When you have some time on them, post back, please, and let us know how they worked out for you.
  • I will be using the Renogy 30a multifunctional solar panel controller with lcd display. I am upgrading the controller to this one when I order the 200w starter kit. I'm glad to hear this setup will work. Thanks to all!
  • Your set-up will work great but what solar controller will you have? It is worth the extra money ($35 vs $15 on eBay) to get a good one like the Solar30 instead of the cheaper ones that do not have an adjustable voltage or a display.

You will like being able to choose your own Float Voltage for the ambient temp in effect when you are not there. That temp you choose will then be the "nominal" for the "temperature compensation" most controllers have.
  • I have 3 group 24 deep cycle batteries, It will be for weekend use only. I plan to use it for a 26" tv once in a while and mostly smaller stuff when the generator is not on. I just heard its better to have more watts than needed so its not operating to close to max. output and will only draw from the batteries as needed for supply output. Hope this makes sense.
  • Hi,

Is this unit for weekend use? How big is the battery bank? What do you plan to power with the 1000 watt inverter?

There is no reason what you suggest will not work, however, be aware that a 1000 watt inverter running flat out will draw about 100 amps. That can flatten a battery bank pdq.
  • Generally it should not be a problem.
Remember in your Inverter wiring to NOT power the 120V to 12V converter (is shore power converter).
