Questions about repairing Carefree slide topper

The Carefree slide topper came partially unstitched and pulled out from around the poly rod on one of our bedroom slides.

I put a couple of clamps on the canvas and pulled the poly rod out.
Now, I have the canvas draped over the side of the slide. It is still in good condition. It seems that the stitching just rotted. We would like to sew the sleeve back together.

I think I have couple of options. First I could undo the four bolts holding the whole awning and remove it. So how heavy is a bedroom awning? After taking it off, I could hold the whole assembly while the wife runs it through the sewing machine. Second, I could release the clamps and let the spring suck up the canvas and then disassemble the awning. I assume that I would still have to remove the whole assembly and work on the ground? How difficult is it to disassemble the awning, remove the canvas, reassemble and retention the springs? Should I even attempt it or leave it to a professional?

  • I would carefully remove it and take it to an auto or marine upholstery place and have them do it. Your sewing machine probably cant handle the heavy duty thread required.
  • I have read several posts on the stitching going bad. Seems like there was a bad batch of thread out there for a period of time. Seeing that the stitching was going in our toppers I pinned all four and removed the rollers laying them on the roof then slid the toppers out of the roller and roof grooves. I then took them to a tent and awning shop who resewed them for a very reasonable cost. Assembled in reverse order.
  • When our side topper did the same thing as yours. I got out the big ladder and sewed it in place by hand with some extra heavy duty upholstery thread.
  • There are holes in the sides of the roller on the ends you need to put a cotter pin in or a nail to lock the springs in place on the roller. Then you can do it what ever way is best for you. Do NOT unbolt anything without locking those springs in place. Once that is done it is very easy. You will need to drill the rivets on one end to get the awning material off the roller tube and put new pop rivets in when done.
