Rear lights from chassis battery?

Hi all!

I bought a 1991 Jamboree and noticed that some of the lighted that are controlled from the hose are actually using the chassis battery and does not turn off with the aux battery main switch.

Specifically, there is a panel of light switches on the left side, just as you enter the hose. One of them is labeled "rear" and controls two outside lights on the rear and one low on the left side of the hose near the baggage compartment.

When I disconnect the house using the the main aux switch, or when physically disconnecting the aux battery, these lights stay on.

I am concerned that if these lights will drain the chassis battery, even when connected to shore power, because the shore power does not recharge the chassis battery.

Is it supposed to be this way?

  • Are you sure shore power does not charge your chassis battery? It does on some motorhomes.

  • Thanks for the reply,

Couldn't find a box behind the driver. Did find one under the hood in font of the driver on the top left corner of the firewall. About 5 fuses, some of which are chassis and some coach. Pulled one of them that seems to be in charge of only these lights. Seems to be properly wired. I can modify this so it feeds from the AUX disconnect relay, but I am uncomfortable doing that since I still cannon understand why is it connected this way, and not like the rest of the house fuses which are in the panel inside the coach...
Does this make sense to anyone?

  • In a way that is good! The lights on the outside is used for parking and hooking up in the dark with the chassis engine still running.
Some Jamborees have a fuse block behind the driver's seat that contains both chassis and coach wiring. If yours have this box, you may look for some funny wiring in there.
  • Just because the lights do not turn off with the aux switch does not mean they are on the house battery. Disconnect the chassis batteries - what is the light status?

The aux switch should turn off loads like lights but not everything. Would you want it to turn off the refer for example? That's the function of the battery disconnect switch which you may/may not have.
