Rear View Safety System

Looking at purchasing a Rear View Safety camera system. Prefer a wireless system. Anyone had any experience w/ their product; good, bad or indifferent?

  • I have the 2 Cam wireless. Works well. You have to select day or night from the monitor menu--no auto change. Monitor is powered by lighter plug in and camera is powered by running lights. Quick installation.

If you have a rear window and a clear view from the inside, you might want to try (or additionally use) a passive photonic wireless system, i.e. one of the reducing Fresnel lens decals. They generally work quite well during the day, although judging distances is hard. At night it's not possible to see enough context to reasonably tell where a vehicle is in relation to you (whether in your lane or another one, for instance). Despite the limitations, though, they do offer a good bit utility for not a lot of cash.

Obviously on rigs lacking a rear window the lens is a complete non-starter.

If you are going to use at night with approaching lights coming at the rear of your unit be sure to mount it as high as you can get it on the rear and have it point down... Otherwise it will flare up from the approaching lights and you won't be able to see anything.
With the motorhomes it probably isn't a big deal being wired since you can run video cables easy without having to connect them if you had the pulled trailers... Roy Ken

BLESS YOU for that, Roy! I always wondered "Why so High, Why looking Down?"

We don't have a rearview cam so far, but it's looking like High Mounted and Wired Video are the way to go. We have a window over the rear bed and that had me consider wireless looking through that window. Probably too low, but it WOULD have a clear transmission shot forward to the cockpit.
  • I went w/ wired,...
I just thought,....a wireless "mite" work ok, but a wired "will" work great.

But I have learned many other things the hard way.

I mounted the Rear View Safety wired system I bought from Costco on my class C and it works great. Remember that, even with the wireless model, you still have to run wires for power to both the camera and the monitor, while with the wired model you have to run the cable between the camera and the monitor and only find a power source once. The wired model is not that much more difficult to install, and you don't run the chance of having interference. I have mine wired to an ignition on power source in the fuse box so it is on whenever the key is on, works well as a rear view mirror when I am driving.

And I agree, mount the camera high.

Doubling down on this advice. A wireless system may have interference, especially if aluminum is involved. A wired system may be a lot more reliable.

years past the WIRELESS type had problems with keeping a good signal with the real long trailers... Also some things would interfere with the weaker signal... Don't know if all of that has gotten better these days or not...
