Replacing 30 amp cable.

I will be replacing my 30amp TT cable. Other than making sure the power is off and wires connected correctly is there anything else I should be aware of? Thanks-don't want to toast or roast.

  • The (most likely) copper cable you are replacing has recycle value. If you return it to a recycling center, along with aluminum cans, etc. it will offset some of the cost of the repairs. (plus, it's just a nice thing to do)

If you are talking about the shore cord.. Make sure you are unplugged

If you are talking the line TO the shore outlet... Well, there is a bunch of stuff depending on how the wire runs.. But I'll let others cover that.
  • This summer will be my 62nd year since becoming a electrical apprentice and I have found the non-contact voltage detector really handy and have them in the RV, tool boxes and the kids homes for their safety. Both my daughters will change a switch or outlet before trying to get husbands to do anything electrical. I wanted them safe.
  • If you do any cold weather camping, be sure the cable is not plain thermoplastic - it gets very stiff with the cold. Rubber or some of the newer insulations such as Carol's Super Vu Tron will remain flexible in the cold.
  • Thanks folks. And I do have an electric pencil that flashes and beeps for two volt settings. Just remember to change the batteries when they die...or you could.

If your cable is permanently attached to the RV, check that the strain relief at the RV end is up to snuff. You don't want to pull the cable out and have it put strain on the connections to the transfer switch or whatever it connects to.
