[REPORT] - Norcold 1200 replaced with Fisher & Paykel

Exactly a month ago, I posted that my 10 year old Norcold finally bit the dust (see post). I wanted to report back with the outcome.

As I mentioned, I was very space constrained on height due to the fridge being over a furnace. Also with the fridge being halfway in the hallway going to the back bedroom, I definitely needed something counter-depth and with double doors. The only decent size unit that would fit was the Fisher & Paykel RF170ADX4.

I had the work done at Creative Coach in Lakeland, FL. While they are not cheap, after interviewing them and others I felt they had the knowledge and skill to get the job done right. Here are the before and after photos.

I am looking forward to the extra space, better cooling, actually having everything in the freezer FROZEN and not having to defrost!

Oh, almost forgot... In other posts, folks showed how they secured the doors while driving. This never came up when I was working with Creative - I had other work they were doing for me, and I forgot about this detail.

Here is what I chose to do that results in no permanent modification to the cabinet. I had some of these little straps I found at Container Store and I think that is all that is needed to make sure the fridge doors do not swing open. The freezer drawer takes a good but of pressure to open, so I don't think it will open during transit.

  • Hmmmm ... our absorption Norcold RV refrigerator keeps it's freezer compartment at zero or lower ... depending upon what number I have it's control set on.

I'd never have an all electric refrig in our RV. What I would really like in our RV is an absorption refrigerator either with the entire refrigerator - or better still just it's internal refrigeration mechanism - mounted on gimbals so that the critical components were always level no matter what angles the motorhome was camped or temporarily parked at. That would be the right way to do RV refrigerators.

Looks great and you were very wise in choosing a company who could do the job right the first time. The cheapest is not always the best!

On another note, with the advent of super energy efficient compressor refrigerators, I believe the days of the gas absorption refrigerator are numbered.

Not for those who do not wish to install multiple battery banks and large inverters. If my 7 year Norcold were to quit I would replace it in a heartbeat with another absorption unit. I have had zero issues with it.

Might I suggest that you add an easier security option. I use this latch and it looks like it would work perfectly on your new fridge.

Thanks, since I am parked more than moving, I prefer to have something that disappears when I am not in transit. I can get the strap on in about 3 seconds, so hard to get much easier than that.
