Roadmaster Sterling Tow Bar

I noticed recently quite a bit of play in the tow bar's joints while disconnecting the Toad. I had the Tow Bar looked at during one of the Perry FMCA rallies and have used it traveling around 20,000+ miles since then. Anyone experienced concerns like this? The unit has about 35,000 miles on it overall.
  • I've had mine for about 20 years. My 1st needed rebuild was at the 3 year mark. All the joint fittings, nuts & bolts are available on E-Bay or from the manufacturer & very simple to replace. Every 3 years or so, the arms become difficult to slide in or out. The problem is the rubber bushings inside become swollen. They must be replaced. Call the company, they'll send you new ones no cost. Easy to replace.
I agree tho, an $800 item should have a much better life span & warranty.:(
BTW; My tow bar was advertised as weighing 28 lbs. It weights 45 lbs.
Just always wondered about that. lol:h
  • When you spend $800 for a tow bar, it should last longer than a few years, or in a case such as mine 35,000+ miles.
  • I have had a Sterling for many years and had it "overhauled" at a couple of Rallies. At one rally, I was told it would have to be replaced so I called Roadmaster and they told me they could replace it with a refurbished one for $225.00. I got that one 4-5 years ago and it is still working fine.
  • Contact Roadmaster-- they can tell you the name of a dealer in your area who can inspect it for you. Or, if in the Portland, OR area take it by the factory.
