Spark / Fuel Isues

My 5 year old 2000 W Champ died the other day. I did the usual service - oil change - and then ran the generator for at least 6 or 7 hours and shut it down for the night. The generator was running in eco mode when shut down. The next day I went to start it - set eco mode to off, pulled out choke, set engine switch to on and pulled starter rope. The gen would usually start on second pull with this procedure. This time nothing, I did the low oil check - full of oil and the gen has never used oil, lots of gas, then did a check of the spark plug. Some carbon on the plug from running in eco mode, and the plug dry, but in checking for spark no spark. I would have expected the plug to be wet with gas if it was flooded - but no spark and dry plug. I am thinking of two possible sources for the problem - a failure of the engine on / off switch or possibly the low oil sensor failed. But then why would either of these fail after the engine was shut off. I have checked all electrical connections and all seem fine. At a loss as what to try next.

Looking for thoughts or suggestions on what to try. I have been very happy with this generator. Has run flawlessly till the other afternoon.

Thanks to all for thoughts and ideas

  • I sent Champion a detailed email of all trouble shooting that I had done on the morning of the 4th. Being a major holiday in the US I did not expect a response till at least late on the 5th - much to my surprise I received a telephone call from a knowledgeable service rep on the afternoon of the 4th, we discussed the problem and replacement ignition unit was shipped out on the 5th. Lots has been said about Champion's A+ quality of service - needless to say I also give them a major thumbs up and five stars - BH

I suspect "It was OK when I shut it off" is right up there with used car ads that say "ran when parked." It's kind of hard to park a car that isn't running, I might well observe.

  • call Champion the number is on the generator and in the book
    or call SuperGen
the techs at either one will walk you thru the trouble shooting and help you
    find the Problem
    parts are very reasonable
a new replacement control module is very likely much less than another generator
