- mlts22Explorer IIDepends on the filter. Some can be drained/bagged/frozen. For the Camco that goes on the hose, I just chuck it and buy a replacement.

Link? - MEXICOWANDERERExplorerRotoplast® cartridge filters can be incorporated into city water fill lines. They filter to one single micron level. You won't live long enough to see a plugged Rotoplas® filter unless you suck water from a mud puddle.

My water filter won't be used for several months. What suggestions do you have for storage?
Put it in a ziploc bag, put that in a zip loc bag, then give the doubble bagged filter to the HAZ-Mat disposal
Put in a new filter/cartridge when you return to use.
NOTE: any time you store for any long period of time (month or more) this is the ONLY approved procedure for "Storage".. Dispose as Haz-Mat and replace.
This applies to all brands and types.
Haz-Mat disposal around here is Very very expensive! The minute you declare it a HM you just moved into a disposal issue that requires documentation, certified personnel, certified containment and control.
Water filters are Not a Haz-Mat, most are either fibrous materials as in a pre filter and then some type of treated or non treated charcoal material!
Just bag it and chuck it in the trash! Or if you are concerned with the outer material (plastic) dispose as Recycle.
Maybe if your in Flint Michigan it will be a Haz-Mat, but for plain old potable water there should Not be anything Haz-Mat about it! - wa8yxmExplorer III

Housing is s easy to wash and dry, there is nothing to it.
Cartridge is difficult to drain or dry, they absorb a lot of water and hold it for long time. Some cartridges can be cleaned, some you have to throw away because mold will grow in storage. Your cartridge manufacturer should have this info, you'll probably find it in the manual.
Putting it in the fridge will slow down bacterial growth but won't stop it completely. Freezer is probably better, though I didn't try this. Prefer replacing it after longterm storage. - grizzzmanExplorer
