stripped screws on awning attachment

I recently noticed a screw protruding from the flange holding awning to sidewall. I tried tightening it and found it to be stripped along with 3 or 4 others. There is a 1/4" aluminum backplate behind the fiberglass that is supposed to support the awning assembly.
I am looking for a permanent fix for this situation. Any ideas?
  • There are several blind nuts available. A BN is a threaded insert that goes into a wall or through something relatively thin. A jack nut comes to mind as like a molly it has three or four legs that fold out around the hole in which they are inserted.

Google Blind nuts, Jack Nuts and threaded inserts, you'll find one that works for you.

Of course you could just drill it out a little larger and re-thread it to 5/16.
  • It's pretty soft material you are screwing into. I would first try simply moving to the next larger screw of the same length and screw it in gently to see if it will hold. Don't forget to use the appropriate sealant.
  • AMAZON or eBay

    NUTSERT

Stainless nuts are tough enough for this and won't corrode.

Whatever the size choose SAE FINE THREAD nutserts.

Nutserts have a near insane amount of gripping strength. At one time I had to nutsert into overly soft old marine plywood. I removed everything then sprayed Varathane into the holes until the wood would not accept more. I let it dry for three days and the Varathane seemed to significantly strengthen the soft wood.

Quicksilver's clearance lights and rear tail lamps were all changed to 1/4" x 28 stainless steel nutserts. It sure is nice fitting a seven sixteenths socket to the bolts and having no hassles!
  • I have a stick-n-tin trailer. Due to a heavy water load the lag bolts at the upper/rear pulled loose. I added a steel plate on the interior of the wall and used a machine bolt run all the way thru the wall and steel plate.
  • Ditto on the JB Weld. Fill the hole and let it cure. Then redrill if necessary.
