Should we really use one for our 30 amp service and if so what is the best ones to get?
YES
If your Rv is a 30 amp then the Progressive Industries
HW-30c is the best, hard wired in so you do not forget it The Portable version (PT-30C?) is the alternative, in both cases set the power on delay to LONG, this is important (it ships set for Short).
If your RV is 50 amp, change the number in the above to 50, No other changes.
The 2d choice is the TRC SURGE GUARD.. Again basically the same advice save they ship with the time delay already set to LONG and no way to adjust
Advantage PI: Lifetime warranty
Advantage TRC: slightly lower cost. (Warranty beats lower cost).
NOTE: Does not matter the site amperage, Choose 40 or 50 based on your RV's needs. the 30 amp unit works fine for a 30 amp RV on a 50 amp site and the 50 amp unit is the proper one for a 50 amp RV on any site. - BobboExplorer IIIEMS-PT30C portable
OR
EMS-HW30C hardwired
There is no substitute!
On an unrelated note, I just noticed on their website that they now have an add-on bypass switch for the EMS-LCHW50 and the EMS-LCHW30 units.
They also sell a bonding plug for $19. Remember, though, that you can make your own for less then $3 and a trip to the big box hardware store. - Thunder_MountaiExplorer IISurge protectors are like life insurance. You are betting that you are going to die. The insurance company is betting you'll live. We have been using a surge guard since 2004. We had one nearby lightening strike that took out various systems on several nearby unprotected units. We could actually smell the burnt electrical smell in a nearby unit. Our surge protector just shut us down and turned the power on after the time out. Figure it saved us many times the cost.
- harley-daveExplorer IIdefinitely get one. We use a Progressive industries 30A model with read out. It's helped many times by disconnecting the RV for high voltage, low voltage, and caught a mis-wired pedestal before we plugged the RV in. Somewhat expensive but worth every penny in my book.
Dave - DutchmenSportExplorerProgressive Industries because they have a better warranty on their products. Surge Guard does not offer a warranty. Progressive will replace or repair the protector.

These "Surge Protector" questions always start out with a simple question and get complicated way too fast. They all do. Simple search in the search box, "surge protector".... and have fun reading many cans of worms that have been opened! Enjoy! - cmarqExplorerYes!!! progressive is the best. Get the one with digital display it shows voltage amps hertz and error codes. I have the hard wired one. Even on my home hook up it pickup a low voltage incident. My neighbor lost every electrical device in his new 5er because of a surge. It is like insurance hope you never have to use it but you are covered.
