USB outlets in faceplate fed w/ 12v?

I have the Blue Seas USB Plug also and love it. I mounted it near the bed so if I want to use my iPhone to read in bed I can be charging it. You don't need any special box or anything just drill the right size hole and run large enough wires. The current 12 volt plug probably has large enough wire, the Blue Seas is rated a max of 2.1 amps at 5 volts. You don't need to use the square mounting flange if you drill the right size hole.

My buddy just got a new Nash trailer and it has a single wall plate with a 12V standard outlet and just below that is a usb outlet. Both are on the same wall plate. I looked around amazon & ebay and couldn't find one like that. You could call Nash/AF and see if they will sell you one.

I understand what you are saying, but with the usb adapters you still have the option of using a std. 12V accessory plug in device. If you permanently replace the reg cig lighter with the 5V only option you loose that flexibility. Also all the 5V adapters are not equal and I recommend getting one with dual outlets with one rated at 2A and not the normal 1A since some devices need a higher charge rate than 1A. Many are listed as 2 or 2.1A, but that is total for the two outlets and neither are rated higher than 1A. There are USB adapters rated higher with one port rated at 2A and the other at 1A.

I've been using the BlueSeas product for over a year now. It is well built. I've bent the USB plugs 45 degrees unintentionally more than once.

I use it a lot, using it right now.

When charging my Sony mp3 player and listening to music there is a charging humm. This product's humm is much less than other devices I have tried previously. I put a ground loop isolator on the stereo mini plug cable for the humm cure.

There is a small parasitic draw.

Be careful the wires supplying your "cigarette receptacle might not be able to support much added amps. etc. My "99 coach just won't carry any 'extra" without blowing its fuse! Just saying.

I have wired alot of things like this and always try to use standard PVC Electrical boxes from LOWES. These come with easy install screwdriver tabs where all you do is cut the right rectangular hole in the wood panels. This will protect your 12VDC connection behind the panels.



Once the box has been installed then you can use a BLANK panel and drill the right size hole in it to mount the USB flip lid device.

Best thing to do is go to lowes and rummage thru their electrical parts to see what would work best for you... Maybe take the DUAL USB unit with you...

If you are close to the 12VDC Distribution Panel you can run a new 12VDC fused circuit to these USB units using what is called 2- conductor BOAT CABLE That looks like this...


Doing a professional install protects the next guy that may own your trailer down the road...

Keep in mind I haven't done any measurements - this is presented to give you a professional install idea using electrical components from Lowes ...
