Valve core that won't accept or expell air?

Lady up the way drives her MH about once a month for a short drive and then airs up her tires. Has been doing this for over 4 years now. She asked me to see if I could get air in one of her inside dual. Her set up has a valve stem on her 22.5 inch tire. Then a 4 inch valve extension. I couldn't get air in or out either. I took the valve extension off and the valve extension and it works right. I can get air going both ways, in and out.

But can't get air in or out of valve stem that is attached to rim.

I think most folks have messed with a leaking valve stem.

What about a valve stem that does just the opposite. No air in or out.

  • We'll never know what the real problem was. She took it to tire place, $39.00 for new valve stem.
  • Our Motorhome came with the screw on valve extensions. For the most part they work fine. A few years ago, I had a problem where one of the inner tires won't take air and if I tried to check the pressure the pressure would be 0. Like you, I took the extension off and blew air into it and it worked fine. Put it back on and it still did not work.

Our valve extensions have a jam nut which increases or reduces the amount of thread on the extension on both ends. On the end that attaches to the valve stem, I tightened the jam nut about 2 complete revolutions and then they worked much better. I haven't had a problem since.

It is possible there could be a problem with the valve core or the valve stem. I had a valve stem on a previous vehicle where the valve core would rattle loose. You can buy a valve core removal tool at any auto parts store for a buck or two. Remove the valve core and re-seat it.

  • Use the little straw thing and shoot some WD-40 or penetrating fluid into the valve and let it set for awhile. Might free it up if it is frozen.
  • If you can't DIY, goeth to a tire shop and replace the operating part of the valve. FWIW, I have a small core wrench that might fit between the tires or at the most, demount the outside wheel and have at it. BTW, I can count on one hand the number of broken core stems I've seen. Improbable but totally possible.

It's plausible that the valve stem could be plugged, I'd imagine particularly if there was something along the lines of fix-a-flat put in at some point.

If it were my problem, I'd probably remove the wheel (so as to get access) and see if I couldn't get things working by removing and replacing the valve core. If the air won't come out when the valve core is removed, it's probably time to go to a tire shop, I'd guess. It may be possible to free up whatever is causing problems by poking at it with a wire or something, but that strikes me as potentially a pretty dangerous stunt to try.

Thanks...I never thought about maybe tire has some fix a flat stuff put in it. I'll ask her.

    Thanks
