So after reading the responses of all you kind people the volt regulator would be the way to go it says it has a surge protector installed in the unit? Again the reason I focused on fulltimers was because we will be at different campgrounds as we see the country. As I have read each campground will be different and different time of day will make a voltage drop such as morning (coffee makers ect.), the purpose of choosing the voltage reg. is to protect my appliances in my coach.
None of the three major voltage regulator brands (
TRC,
PowerMaster, and
Hughes) offer the kind of surge and fault protection like a
TRC or a
Progressive surge/fault protector.
I don't know what PowerMaster or Hughes recommends because I went with TRC products, and here's what they recommend for a 50A system:
-
TRC Model 44270 -- connects directly to the power pedestal. It's used to
detect electrical faults (open ground, open neutral, reversed polarity), but the 44270 offers no real protection. That is, it will
not disconnect like a surge protector would. A 44270 just
indicates that you have a problem. Keep that in mind. It's essentially an expensive version of one of these plug-in indicators you can pick up in a hardware store.
-
Model 10175 Voltage Regulator -- this connects to the 44270.
-
Model 40240 Surge/Fault Device -- a hard-wired unit that connects to the output of the voltage regulator.
