Want a "bigger" battery but where to put it?

[img] [/img]Hey all,

I have a 2015 Keystone Laredo 291TG TT and I would like to get a battery(s) that can last longer while camping without electric. I have a genny (inverter) so I can charge as needed but the Interstate HD24-DP that came with the RV just doesn't quite do it. However, I don't have much, if any more space to put a physically larger battery. If I knew how to post a pix I would. Either way, the fiberglass cap of the Rv covers the propane and the single battery box is right in front which means, if I need to get the propane bottles out (or in) I need to lift them over the top of the battery box so I can't make the box higher and since it's smuggled in the very front of the A frame, I can't really go much longer or wider either.

So ... is there a "more power" 12v battery that has the same footprint as a G24 battery?

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
John

Edit: It helps when you read how to post a pix. Hope this image helps in understanding my fit issues.

  • Yes, a G29 will fit in a G24 box. If you can go wider there's a G31 but it needs a bigger battery box.
I have a G31 box I'm not using, PM me if you want the measurements from it.
  • I only have 1 group 24 battery and if I leave everything as is, I can probably fit a taller battery but no longer or wider. They really crammed everything in a tight space. I've guessing they were thinking most people would use this rv for resorts and places with power poles.

You have Group 24s Two of 'em

Can you put in a TALLER battery.. Two with the same foot print but TALLER?

    Reason for asking

Group 24,, 73 AH (C/20 rate) total 146 AH,, MARINE/deep cycle.. About 65 AH usable

GC-2 Come in a few sub types 210, 215, 220,230,240 and 250 amp hours (This is for the pair since these are six volt batteries you wire in series)

The "Bigger" the taller.. but they usually fit a group 24 Base

Mine were 220.. I upgraded to 230 when I got my new ones.

Flooded wet cell means you need to water them (DISTILLED ONLY) occaionsally.

DEEP CYCLE means you can use 1/2 of the amp hour rating safely (IE> 220 you can use 110 safely)

That is a whole lot better than what you got now.

Oh. regarding the fact that when you buy 'em they are six volt

once PROPERLY installed.. Think of them like this -{Bat}t{ery}+12 volts

That is the two proprly wired (As typed) become one single 12 volt battery (4D or 8D electrically) think of them as such and most of your questions self answer:

Can I _____ just one? Can you ____ 1/2 of a 12 volt battery? (same answer).
  • Are there any issues using the standard RV charger/converter to charge AGM's? I normally leave mine plugged in all the time when it's not being used. And yes, I do check the electrolyte levels.
  • Go with AGM and you can put them inside the cabin. I utilized a dinette storage bay for 4x group 31 batteries and a 2.8KW inverter. Completely eliminated the group 27 that lived on the a-frame. The existing wiring that used to charge the old battery now connects the new batteries to the e-brake switch.

Most of us that had to deal with recessed batteries came up with a mounting of battery trays on TOP of the trailer frame using steel angle strips.. There is nothing wrong with extending these metal angle strips out on each side of the frames..

Some had to move things abit. I mounted four GP24 sizes battery boxes across the top of my trailer frame.

Some have moved the propane tanks more to the front to make some room...

Also TORKLIFT makes battery hangers that you mount under the frame under your trailer to hold ONE battery box.

  • I have an AGM under my bed. I also have a .1 gram scale and that battery has not lost .1 gram in 7-months. Change BOTH batteries to AGM. I would prefer Lifeline. One group 24 to replace the existing battery and a group 31 XT to remote mount. Lots of reserve power then...

I don't know, but there is the AGM battery option. They're safer to mount in enclosed locations where you'd not dare put LAs.
