- hbskiExplorerIt is actually greed and the the ease at which lawyers can win ridiculous lawsuits that have caused this proliferation of "saving" everyone from themselves.
Some people REALLY are dumb and use/abuse things in the wrong way and get hurt. Unfortunately they do not just chalk it up to THEM being dumb, they and a lawyer demand that the company was at fault.....jury sees big heartless company VS poor little imbecile and awards them a huge settlement.....then every company needs to protect themselves from the consumer and adds 85 labels to every product.
The litigation society has to be changed before companies can ever hope to be rid of over reaching regulations. - If a person is prone to leave the lights on... could they be prone to leaving that harmless manual charger on too long until the battery explodes? Who pays for that?
I sleep better knowing my neighbor has an automatic charger that will shut off.
If it leaves him with a battery only 95% it will still get him to work just fine. - MEXICOWANDERERExplorerRJ,
Look close. No I mean outside past the bars. See those brown eyes? They're chimpanzees looking in and commenting to each other. The monkeys are running the zoo and you are the star attraction. Every aspect of life including regulations and merchandice design for RVs is being puppeteered by legal pressure to conform to somone else's wishes as to what you should buy. If I were to say stoutly object to the stupidly designed RV electrical shore power plugs and sockets have you any idea what kind of maelstrom this would cause? Twist-Lock connectors are so vastly superior to simple push and pull ot isn't funny. And the concept is not expensive. But it is a design gridlock. A 30-amp 120-volt twist lock will outlive a push pull receptacle manyfold.
We are not permitted to think any more. The linkage between scientists, engineers and consumer is broken perhaps forever. If you are unable to fathom this I pity you.
If I brought my BORG north and put it to work in a commercial status and OSHA got wind of it they would crucify me. The inspector is not qualified cannot even conceptualize obvious safety features plain to the naked eye. Not UL or ETL approved and he hasn't a clue as to what design requirements would qualify the device.
New chargers eliminate transformers and manual control. They have inalterable training wheels on them to avoid lawsuits. The people who promote these abominations have no idea how to manage a lead acid battery. Not a clue. Baffle 'em with enough BS and they'll buy it. Then they'll eventually start humming the company jingle.
How time has changed since the adventerous early days of RVing. So sad. - LarryectExplorer

Slightly different realities here. Read the definitions for GOVERN versus RULE
It's suit and tie leeches that terrorize underwriters who are ruling the roost these days. Overcharge a battery: Litigate. Undercharge a battery: Neglect. How far would you hanger your "sitter" out in the wind investing in a battery charger product?
Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Baaaaaaaaaaaaa! The barrister/lawmaker/micro managers of the USA are navigating its populace, er pardon me, its flock, into neatly formed lines of two hundred million incompetent nincompoops.
And the public is not only marching to the tune of this Orwellian idiocy, the brainwashed are demanding that everyone else memorize the lyrics.
What does this have to do with "programmed" battery chargers? They are mandated to think according to the rules which have nothing to do with reality.
I used to miss my work. Not any more. I stand outside the zoo watching the monkeys watching the people inside the exhibits.
Here, Here. Got that right. It's not just battery chargers either. - RJsfishinExplorerAnd the battery God that everyone here worships, has spoke.

Got it at an estate sale for a song.
Also a 2-20-50A maybe older. Both are heavy and rugged and work great. ALso have a light smart charger that is useless unless the battery isnt dead. Then it works ok. - LarryectExplorer

Apparently, basic dumb chargers are not allowed to sold in CA anymore. I like smart chargers, but I have had batteries go so dead occasionally (head lights left on, on the car) the smart charger will not charge it. Instead it says the battery is bad. A dumb charger brought it up enough to get the smart charger take over......
That is why it is a good idea to have a portable jump start to give the dead battery some life.

Yea, I was thinking one of those small Lithium(?) battery units to keep handy. But, the reviews on amazon appeared to be purchased or conflicting. A gave up and figured jumper cables and/or my old home-made dumb charger could work for now.. - darsbenExplorer IIIt is amazing that people complain about government regulations on this forum but then when they get "taken" in a transaction the same people wonder why nothing is done to protect them.
Mexicowanderer I am not talking about you just making a general observation. - MEXICOWANDERERExplorer"I have people that do that for me"
