Wind blowing out pilot on hot water heater

New 2014 KZ Spree Escape. We had it out 4 times and had to fix 2 water leaks. The hot water heater will not stay on if it is the least bit windy. Also, we camp in the Rocky Mtns at altitudes of 7500 to 10000. Just read the Nordic refrigerator only works at 5,000 or below in elevation. Seriously? Why didn't the deal tell us that when we told him where we camp...

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I'd bet the OP knows a pilot flame when he sees one.
I would first re adjust the air mix (very easy) on the main burner flame for the hi altitude,......that could improve it drastically.
Those pilot flame heaters suck in the wind, even the latest ones.
Installing a baffle in the door can help it,....or park your TV close to it.

Unless it was changed out...OEM water heater is 6 gallon DSI

    We'll see.

  • The Spree Escape's have a 3 or 4 cu. ft. fridge and optional 6 cu.ft. Internet says the fridge is Dometic...

I looked up the trailer on KZ's webpage and it specifies "DSI Water Heater" which means Direct Spark Ignition. In other words not a "standing pilot" that would blow out. Not to say altitude isn't affecting its ability to light and stay lit, but there should NOT be a pilot to be able to blow out. Some of the fridges are so small on these KZ's that they might not be the LP with DSI and 120VAC electric that we get questions about.
Plese post Make and Model of Water Heater and Fridge. Maybe we can provide more specific help.
For the moment, even though altitude is likely an issue, I'd still be interested in verifying that the LPG system is delivering the proper flow and the regulator is delivering the proper pressure.
  • That water heater should be DSI (electronic ignition) and not a pilot flame type

The Main Flame will be ignited by a spark electrode and flame will turn ON/OFF as needed...controlled by t-stat.
If it should blow out it would relight.

Did you check that you had hot water from faucets.

High altitude is a problem with propane appliances.
Unfortunately Norcold doesn't have a High Altitude Kit....different size orifice.
Check the LP system gas pressure.......should be 11" WC with at least 50% of gas appliances ON.
    Might increase it a bit.

Sometimes you can install a small wind block vane and keep your Water heater lit. I never had much luck playing with it.

An ice maker and a 5-day good quality ice chest may be in your future hehe...
