Winegard Woes

My Wingard antenna crank handle is all of a sudden is turning when I adjust the directional bezel? It won't turn if I hold the handle. I haven't had a chance to investigate the cause as of yet but does anyone have a tip as to where to look first? Also I got up on the roof and lubed it in May prior to the start of the season.

  • The antenna does not raise or lower when the "whole assy" is turned.
Maybe if you understood how the elevation operated, you could understand that your antenna is working properly,....as is mine.

Well then I guess my antenna has been malfunctioning for the last six years because the crank handle did not and should not be turning when moving the directional handle. Do you really think that the system is designed so that the antenna lowers when you change the direction is being pointed? Maybe yours is not working right and you don't know any better because it's always been like that for you, however that doesn't mean it's working right.

Um- if the elevating handle doesn't turn with the directional handle, you are raising or lower it, as you would be rotating the housing and lift gear around the worm gear- it's just that it takes a LOT of turns to raise and lower, but you can only rotate once.

Either way, it's really of little or no consequence.

    What ??
Are you making a problem where there is none ??
I just tried mine,...the elevation crank is supposed to turn while turning the directional pointer. The whole assy turn together. Where is the problem ??

  • all parts are available .. Amazon ...

I just replaced the seals/shaft... as mine started to leak water.

you can download the manual from Winegard.

  • Do you use the reccomended silicone spray on the elevating gear and also remove the flat top plug and spray it there?

    This is from the manual:

    LUBRICATION (Done 3-4 times annually)

STEP 1: To lubricate the elevating gear, apply a
liberal amount of silicone spray lubricant to the
elevating gear with the lift in the down position (see
illustration). Run the lift up and down to distribute the
    lubricant over gears.

STEP 2: Two times yearly, or in the event rotating the
antenna becomes difficult, normal operation can be
restored by lubricating the bearing surface between
the rotating gear housing and the base plate. Any
silicone lubricant spray may be used. Elevate
antenna and remove plastic plug from rotating gear
housing as shown. Spray lubricant into hole and
around edges of gear housing. Rotate gear housing
until lubricant coats bearing surfaces and antenna
    rotates freely.

Put a dollop of white lithium grease on the spring that pushes against the directional dial and it should stop. The friction from the steel spring and plastic components causes your problem.

This was my 1st thought also, but strike one. Did just this a couple hours ago and it was a no go. I'll get up on the roof to check things out soon as I can :h PS even with the crank handle off the elevating shaft turns.

there should be a set screw in the handle. tighten it and you should be back in biz.
