- Ron3rdExplorer IIIWould a laser thermometer work if aimed into the water in a glass after being in the fridge for a while?
- btcruzerExplorerChris, I'm thinking that after ( if )the heat drops this evening, I'll take a glass of water from my house fridge and secure my wireless thermometer to the side of the glass with elastic or rubber bands. So far today the fridge seems to behaving well. Keeping an even safe temperature. Later on, I'll detail steps I've taken trying to get this thing cooling.
- btcruzerExplorerChris -- good point on the method of measuring. I've been using a wireless thermometer. I'm in the middle of a test cycle and the temp in the cooler is staying around 35 to 37 degrees even as the outside temp has climbed to 87 degrees. The flame has been cycling on/off but has been mostly on as the outside temp increased.
- j-dExplorer IIYes the Cooling Unit cools Freezer First, so a failing one could give decent freezer and poor fridge. But check everything noted above before condemning the cooling unit or the entire fridge.
To add to the list, be sure the Door Gaskets are GOOD and in FULL contact with the frame of the fridge. On our Norcold, the doors aren't stiff enough to do that on their own. They stay tight by the latches, but we have to push the corners.
The RV-type fridge never cools "powerfully" like the compressor-driven ones. It'll work satisfactorily only when everything is right. - Chris_BryantExplorer IIHow are you measuring the temperature? Keep in mind, most thermometers are measuring the air temp, and when you open the door, all of the cold air leaves. The temp should be measured using a thermometer in a glass of water, for some thermal mass.
- red31Explorerimproper heat, ventilation or level.
- mcheroExploreri had a Norcold side by side that was DOA when we purchased the new to use 07 Discovery. 1st thing I did was purchase a new Amish cooling unit. Works like a champ now!

- Matt_ColieExplorer IIWell bt,
I kinda hate to say this, but that is standard symptom of a failing cooling unit. You might try standing it on its head for a day then upright for another and then fire it up and see what it does, but with those symptoms, the odds are not good.
They cannot be repaired or recharged, but the cooling unit can be rebuilt and then replaced. Lots of the places that do that do an exchange for about half of new.
