05 dodge 5.9 cummins reliability?

410,000 kms on my 03 5.9 standard output. All original on motor except water pump. Has been a tow vehicle it's entire life. This past year was 230,000 of those kms. The 47re trans went out at 350 kms.
I'd buy another one without hesitation.

The lone negative post is from our local Ram hater. Go figure.
If you treat this like Amazon does it's a no brainier, the lone jerk is just that usually. Do the math and subtract the negative comment from the positive ones.

My 03 was one of the best vehicles I have ever had. It had around 110,000 miles on it when I traded it in, most all were towing.

Our 05 RAM has had all 6 injectors now replaced, has a cracked manifold, the 4x4 does not engage, and of all things the front seat had to be replaced.

Purchased it for a song, but discussions are taking place to maybe find it's replacement before spring.

I would avoid one with the 47RE like the plague!

I have a third generation 5.9. 150K,alot of towing,long distances. The only repairs that I have had to do were a water pump (early on,under warranty),front pinion seal on the axle, blower motor and just the other day, hood struts. Just put second set of front brakes on,rears are original. Ordered new Bilstein shocks all the way around,the originals are still on there. I left it stock,no chips or mods. They are great trucks. You should have a similar experience!:B

I've been happy. Heck even the crate wrapped around the Cummins has held up nicely. I also check that clamp on #4 each oil change but it has never been loose.

3rd generation Cummins, as good as they come, minimal emissions equipment. I have an '05 3500 2WD. The powertrain has been flawless (I bought it used in '08). The rest of the truck? Let's say it's been a bit frustrating and less than completely satisfying ownership experience...............

I also will pop in with an 01, same engine slightly different fueling system. Coming up on 265,000 miles still pulling an 11,000# fiver with a small DS Power Puck (timing) chip. I will state that I prefer a stick, so I have a 5 speed. There are several company's that will rebuild the trans, to be much stronger than stock.

great truck, just got back from a trip to the smoky mountains, pulled our trailer fine up into the mountains and down out of the mountains.

gets very good mpg for a large heavy truck, talk with some of the guys buying new trucks, all brands, not so good!

drives good, rides good,

mama bear even likes to drive it, as it handles well

plenty of power and you can roll a little coal with it from time to time.

yes, I would buy another one, if they still made them.

I have 5.9 in the 2001 model. Best I've ever owned. Water pump and lift pump (upgraded to FASS system)in 12 years of ownership. Only thing I don't like about it is A/C system and rear end traction in ice/snow. I'm shopping around for a replacement(new or used) and can't find anything that comes close to the trouble free miles I've had with it.
IMO keep it stock, clean filters and clean oil keeps trouble away.
