110 Volt grounding ???

Why is the trailer metallic skin or metal frame parts not grounded back on 110 Volt. Is this because it is also the ground for the 12 volt system ??

  • Thought there might be a concern if a direct short occurs at the trailer chassis would a back feed through the tow vehicle through the common ground affect the sensitive ECM . I am hoping that the trucks computer has the isolator built into it.I guess a lot also depends on how good the camps grounding rod is??
  • Just another note, there should be an isolator circuit from your truck to your trailer. So if something weird does happen with your trailer, it shouldn't affect your tow vehicle. So anything weird should be isolated to your trailer.

This is a typical electrical layout of a typical camp ground pedestal. This is the only EARTH GROUND you will need for your trailer. NOTE Only the GREEN cable is going to an EARTH GROUND ROD at the pedestal.

This is how my 120VAC and 12VDC electrical system is setup on my OFF-ROAD POPUP trailer.

Both the GREEN cable coming in from the connected SHORE POWER CABLE and the NEGATIVE BATTERY cables are connected to the trailer FRAME GROUND.

You can see the WHITE NEUTRAL CABLE from the camp ground pedestal is NOT GROUNDED anywhere on the trailer side.

This is why it most important to have a good GREEN WIRE SAFETY GROUND connection coming from the camp ground pedestal. This is the only EARTH GROUND you have on the RV TRAILER.

  • The trailer frame and any other metal parts should be grounded via the green wire safety ground of the power cord.
  • I did not know that 12 volt grounding and 110 volt grounding could be connected in circuit.. Just wondering and I do believe that you are correct however just thinking if a short occurred would the tow vehicle electrical 12v computer be affected if they were all connected in circuit/??
  • I think they are...or maybe I'm not understanding your question...:?
All of my trailers have had a ground wire attached to the frame. Our present one is grounded near the steps. I regularly check this ground to make sure it is intact and not rusted.
