- Dakota98ExplorerOpinions seem to be divided. Inverter or power brick ?
The inverter offers more options for use. The power brick is dedicated typically to a single device.
You decide. ;)
This is the one I am currently using. It has worked perfectly & has "low voltage" shut-down. - bobndotExplorer IIII have both . When I use the OEM Jensen 12 v. 15" I have no issues. When I use the 22" 110v plugged thru an inverter, I have an issue and really don't know why. Maybe the wiring to the outlet is too light a gauge for that inverter ?
I have a 150w PSW that plugs into an OEM 12 v outlet (not hard-wired) .
When I plug my 110 tv into it , everything is fine until I run the water pump or furnace . The PSW inverter will let out a very loud squeal. I think it is a low voltage alarm. It does this on my house battery system (2-12v. grp 31's) which reads full...12.7v.
I have since added one more 3rd battery dedicated to the (inverter) 110v tv only. I didn't know what else to do and have been using it this way since.
Bob - billtexExplorer IIIf you camp off the grid a 12v unit will be well worth any additional cost (minimal in my experience...check out some of the trucker sites, they have all kinds of 12v stuff...).
If you camp with hook ups it really wont matter.
If you do dry camp, you will wan to count all your power use, and using an inverter vs 12 v will result in additional power loss...
Bill - Victory402ExplorerI bought a unit at best buy that had the 12v brick. Cut the cord and wired it directly to a 12v light and it has been working fine. Easy mod.

The 12v TV's are junk and bottom tier units with warranties that are worthless. The draw for a LED LCD TV is so low that a tiny inverter will more than handle the load.
We had a Polaroid, Jensen, and Skyworth DC TV's over a 2 year period. We have a 110AC 19" Toshiba combo DVD TV that has been used for more than 7 years and still works perfectly.
Sounds like you had some real bad luck with your 12 volt purchases. Three separate TVs in a 2 year period sounds like something more than just a TV problem. Im going on 5 years with the Jensen and about 2 years with the RCA, both 12 volt, and they work great. - I always recommend a small sine wave inverter and a low wattage tv.
- hedgeExplorerLike Darsben says, I bought a cheap Insignia tv from future shop with an external brick power supply, cut off the cord and put on a 12v plug. Worked great all season. My OEM POS Jensen dvd player is also wired to the tv location so we can use it to watch movies, all on 12v.
- Ski_Pro_3ExplorerMy TV also runs on 110vac with a transformer or also known as the power wart. This plugs into the TV as 12vdc. So I also have a cigarette lighter adapter and run the TV on 12 volts. This is just like my laptop; I can run it on 110vac or from the power port on the car at 12volts.
I find 12 volts draws .5amps for the TV. The inverter draws .7amps just idling so why have the inverter and more current draw when the TV runs on 12 volts anyway? - darsbenExplorer IIThe ONLY difference between a 12 volt TV and a 110 volt TV is the transformer. Some 110 volt TV's have an external brick to convert line voltage to 12 volt, while some 110 volt TV's have an internal transformer. NO TV utilizes line voltage to run the components.
So if you buy a 110 volt tv with an external (brick)transformer you can run it off of 12 volt when 110 is not available by just getting a cord. Why you would want to invert the 12 volt to 110 volt to then have the brick convert the voltage back to 12 volts is beyond me specially when you have a pure 12 volt DC off the battery.
When you go to the store just look for a unit with an external transformer.
BESTBUY Insignia brand and Walmart Sceptre brands have external transformers as do many others - wintersunExplorer IIThe 12v TV's are junk and bottom tier units with warranties that are worthless. The draw for a LED LCD TV is so low that a tiny inverter will more than handle the load.
