2008 F350

All,

Been looking at diesels and ran across a '08 F350 4x4 with a 6.4 in it. I was looking at used diesels but more in the 1-3 year old range. Any issues/concerns with that year, age, etc.?

I really like the 6.7's but really don't know a ton about the 6.4's? I am planning on keeping whatever truck for quite a while mainly for towing hence the reason why I was looking for a "newer" used one?

Price seems about right at $29K compared to $45+ for others in '15-'16 range.

Thanks in advance for your candid feedback.

  • They have alot of problems. I put a Cummins in my buddy's when it needed 7-8k of work done.
  • My city public works trucks are both 2008 Fords with the 6.4. Both were purchased new and both have around 70k miles on them. Earlier this year the F550 developed a low power output issue and threw codes for a low fuel pressure problem. A friend of mine is a Ford mechanic and recommended I replace the fuel filters 2 times but bet it was an injector pump. I replaced the filter and it ran OK for a bit but did it again. We took it to a shop and they replaced the injector pump at the cost of $4,500.

Sounds like the 6.4 is a bit shaky compared to the 6.7?

What you just said is tantamount to saying: " Jeffrey Dahmer was a nice guy with a slight eating disorder." ;)
  • From my friends that have 6.4's "The only reliable 6.4 is an EGR/DPF deleted 6.4".
  • I am no expert. but two seconds of google-fu provided many many PO'd Ford owners including this thread:

  • Even Fish doesn't recommend a 6.4. Now THAT is telling! :B

Or as a Ford tech says: "the 6.0 is junk and the 6.4 is expensive junk!"

May be of use to you. Do this BEFORE you buy.

Edit: should've added "if you buy"
  • I would not pay 9K of a 6.0 or 6.4. The fact that you are here asking questions about a 6.4 is very telling. Get on google and start reading.
