2011 Ram 1500 Integrated Brake Controller

Just purchased a 2011 Ram 1500 SLT (picking up next week) with the factory towing package, but it doesn't have the integrated brake controller. So my options are to either put in an aftermarket controller or the factory controller. I still haven't checked under the dash to see if I have 1 or two connectors (two required for the factory controller).

So my questions are, in reading about installing the factory controller I've read where the trucks computer must be reflashed so the controller appears on the dashboard display.

What is the purpose of seeing it on the dashboard display, what information is displayed, and will the controller still function if the trucks computer isn't reflashed?

My old controller (Hayes) was simple to operate, one knob to adjust to apply more or less braking pressure, and of course the manual brake slider. How do you setup the Ram factory controller, the more detail the better!
Thanks
  • I love the OEM controller. What has been reported wrong with them? I only hear good things about them. Easy to setup and use.

From reading on the Cummins forum yes lots of guys like them, but a good amount hate em. It seems that they work better with trailers that don't have strong brakes. It was marginally good on our TT that had 10,000 miles on it. TT brakes were adjusted but TBC wouldn't lock them up with the gain set at 10. That seems to be one of the issues with them is they lack strong braking power.

Other issue is exact opposite and that is that they grab too much. Our new 5'er has larger brakes, 12" vs 10". Ram TBC will lock at 4-5 gain. Even on 0 gain they still stick when letting up on the brakes.

Those are the problems that you'll find if you Google Ram TBC. I know the Prodigy's have boost settings of 14 and 28%. I'm just wondering if the Ram controller has a boost feature and it's factory set too high.

I have read countless complaints all featuring the above situations. If you have a good one then count your lucky stars and go buy a lottery ticket:). I had the 1st one replaced under warranty with only 1,000 miles on the Ram.

Just to add some more insight I towed the same exact TT with a 2010 F150 maxtow with an OEM TBC for 2-1/2 yrs. Never a problem. It would lock the brakes up around 7-8 gain. No more than 2 weeks latter after towing with the F150 I hooked up the Ram and nothing. Needed the OEM replaced. New TBC installed and like I said marginal performance. It's just interesting the difference between the two brake controllers.

I have a 2012 Ram 2500 with the factory installed brake controller. Take my advice, get a Prodigy P2 or P3. Lots of posts here from people who don't like the Ram factory controller, which I also do not like. I took the Prodigy P2 out of my 2007 Ram 1500 before I traded it for my Ram 2500. I'm glad I did because I can see myself installing the Prodigy in the near future.
I bet you are not going into the EVIC and properly adjusting it. The 12 Ram controller is a great controller.

I do have the OEM controller installed by factory, how do you select heavy or light electric brakes. All that's on my controller is gain +and -, and the manuals slide co troller for the trailer brakes

If you would list what your truck is you might get an answer!
  • Op if you want the best controller out there get a MaxBrake! Seamless braking.
  • The brake controller on the 2010 and 2011 Dodges isn't the same as the one in the 2012 models. In my opinion you'd have to be crazy to install a factory unit in one of those year trucks as it's beyond bad, it's horrible. The only control you have for it is gain, and the gain control is all but useless. If you have a factory installed controller you're going to cry if you ever have to drive on snowy, or even gravel roads as the adjustment range is all but worthless. On my old trailer my 2011 couldn't be adjusted high enough to lock the brakes even on gravel roads. With my Timber ridge, it will lock on pavement at two or three, and locks on gravel even when set to zero, which obviously isn't really zero.

If you complain to the dealer they will just off the record mention they "Have issues"
  • The controller in the 12's HD's are very good. My HD truck is a late 11, the controller worked better than my old junk P-2 but still not very good.

I recently spent the $350 and installed the MaxBrake, it is worth every penny!

It is easy to install, it ties into the brake line with a Honeywell pressure sensor that plugs into the controller and they have a cable that plugs into the factory harness and into the MaxBrake controller. That is it. You adjust it once and then you can tow any trailer without further adjustment.

It is truly seamless braking. Imagine touching your brakes without a trailer attached, that is exactly how it feels with the trailer attached.

It is one of those products that you really don't know how poorly your controller works until you have a MaxBrake.

Dutch and Di are members on here and they sell the MaxBrake along with other quality RV products.

My controller works great, nothing is wrong and shows up in evic as it was installed by the factory before I purchased my 2012. I just don't see how you can select between heavy and light electric without the evic as that's where you can choose. The brake controller mounted in the dash only has the gain settings with a digital readout and the manual slide. How can you know which mode your in or even change it if the controller won't tell you this. I happen to like mine very much and works great and will easily lock up trailer tires. But I have read where some don't like it so I was letting the op know about this
  • with the 12's you need to go into the evic to set electric or hydraulic disk and light or heavy trailer.

My Dad did not know about these settings. I told him and now he loves his controller in his 2012 RAM HD 2012.
