2013 explorer and corrosion on hood ??

Good friend of mine has a 2013 explorer and has noticed with 41,000 miles on it bubbling on edge of hood by welds I think. I am pretty sure this is an aluminum hood. I did look up this and found many others out there with this problem. My question is if anyone on this site has this issue with their explorer?? and if so, did ford do anything for you ? They told my friend unless its a hole they will do nothing. He did not want to hear that of coarse.
  • OK I remember now it was a 1977. He drove it for us to see but I was playing in the Elks band and had to go to practice so he was kidding about our new 1978 mustang so to get him back I said you don't know if your olds will even start.

To end this fine story my wife said "guess what " when I came home. Your dad had to call a tow truck. the mustang turned out to be junk and I ended up with the olds later.

  • I also have a 2013 Explorer and have the same problem with only 37,000 miles (just outside the 36,000 mile warranty). I took it to my local Ford dealer who contacted Ford on my behalf to see if they would cover it. Ford declined and said unless it was a hole, it was not covered. In my conversation with the body shop manager at the dealer, he explained to me that it is not rust. He said that the Explorer has an aluminum hood, and vibration from driving causes the paint to fracture allowing moisture, salt and other contaminates in, causing the bubbling. He said eventually the paint will just start to flake off. He also said it is a common problem on these vehicles and pointed out another Explorer that was there getting repaired for the same problem. He said it would cost me $600 to fix it. However, I have contacted Ford directly to fight this. I did have a representative call and leave a message that they wanted to make me an "offer" on the repair, but unfortunately we keep playing telephone tag, so I am not sure exactly what their "offer" is.

I know you're joking. After all your handle is chevman ! ;)

Olds 98's left production around 1996 and Oldsmobile was shut shut down forever in 2004.

If you really do have a 2007 Olds 98...don't let it go...that thing is a one of one. Barrett-Jackson would be interested. :D

I thought Olds was shut down in '09.

Funny you mention that... My dad drove only Chevy's and my mom drove Oldsmobiles. They made a mistake and purchased a POS Grand Cherokee and then went back to a Olds Sport Ute which was a much better vehicle.

My dad kept my grandparents 1971 Olds Delta 88 2dr with a 455. Brown exterior, white vinyl roof, white vinyl seats and black carpet. :B Original ~36k miles on the car and it spent 100% of it's life in a garage. Even the clock on the dashboard still works.

My '98 F150 had an aluminum hood and never had any corrosion issues with it. Hell that truck is still on the road with over 300k miles on that truck and it just recently had the rear end rebuilt.
  • The hood on my wifes 2014 Edge Sport is steel and I'm pretty sure the Explorer is steel too.
  • Very common on a lot of aluminum body panels. that's why I`m waiting to see how the all aluminum body on the F150 holds up.
  • I just remembered my wife's 2013 Explorer has the same problem. I called a local dealer and they said it is covered under the corrosion warranty based on how I described the bubbling. If the corrosion is the result of rock chips, it's not covered but this problem is under the paint. A magnet will tell you it's a steel hood.
