2013 Ford 350 Supercab diesel 6.7

Saw a 2013 Ford 350 Supercab Diesel 6.7 4x4 at the dealer today. 3.55 axle ratio. Torqshift 6 speed Auto with O/D. Dealers website says payload is 3900lbs. Towing capacity is 12,300. Does this sound right? This would be my first diesel engine truck. Being a new leftover thinking I could get a pretty good deal on it.
I have a few ?'s
How is the newer Ford 6.7 diesel engines?
What kind of mileages per gallon to you get without towing?
In general does the maintenance cost a lot more than the GMC 6.0 or ford 6.2 over the long run?
How is the reliability of the truck overall?
I understand today when you bring your truck into get serviced there is nothing cheap anymore!
Any information would help a lot . Thanks!

  • Oil, oil filter, coolant & batteries, is just about exactly twice as much. Fuel mileage is maybe 20% to 30% better, however price per gallon is about 18% more.
  • My cousin has the first year 6.7 in a F250. He is ROUGH on it, drives it on a sod farm and bats it up on the farm and uses it to tow heavy loads of sod. Hasn't had a single problem and loves his truck to death. It helps that the farm pays his fuel bill... but the truck has been trouble free since day 1. He was a Chevy boy through and through before the farm bought him the F250, he seems to forget all about the bowtie now though... =)

I have never been more thrilled with a vehicle than I am with my Ford 6.7. I had an issue with the turbo the day after picking my truck up at the dealership. Several months later it was replaced under warranty with an updated version. Since then (50,000 miles and coming on 3 years) I have had absolutely zero problems. The truck still looks and drives like new.
  • As iawoody2 mentioned, that tow rating is for the gasser. It is over 16,000 for the supercab and only slightly less for the crewcab.
Love my 2012 F350 6.7 CC long bed FX4. Gets nearly 20 open highway 70-75 not towing (can squeeze over 20 if I can keep my foot out of it). 10+ towing 35' 5er at 65-70. Again does better at slower speeds. But I have hard time doing that. Tows the 5er great even in Colorado mountains.
Yeah, basic maintenance is a little higher, but not that significant in my opinion.
Local Ford dealers were advertising up to $16,000 off sticker on 2013s not long ago. Don't know what they are doing now. Got $14,000 off sticker on my 2012 August last year.
  • I have several friends that are techs and diesel mechanics.
They don't give the 6.7 as good of glowing reviews as this site.

I suggest you go to a Ford site like this one and read about some of the common problems. There are far more common and serious problems with this engine then the mentioned 12 grand CP pump problem.

Although expensive, the pump problems are fairly rare.
  • My opinion, at this point I think it's fairly safe to declare the 6.7L Scorpion reasonably reliable. Yes there have been the aforementioned Bosch pump failures which admittedly is something that'll be in the back of the mind of 6.7L owners, but otherwise I've heard very few horror stories and the engine has now been on the market for a few years.

I'm not sure iawoody2's MPG figures are common though; 20hwy and 18mpg combined sounds really good-- I think if you live in a congested area with its share of stop/go driving you may see smaller numbers than those.

As far as service costs, yes it'll likely cost a bit more than a gas pickup on regular maintenance but it isn't a big spread.

Where costs really come into play on diesel vs gas is out-of-warranty repairs, which in your case won't be a concern.

Summing up, I think the 6.7L has, for the most part, proven itself to be a good engine and if you like the truck and it fits your budget, go for it.
  • The 6.7 -may- be too new to really know the reliability, certainly Ford has addressed it, the question is, how well did they.

The only issue I know about, is the Bosch CP-4 fuel pump (also used in, VW and Audi, among others) -had- shown a high enough failure rate that there was been a forced investigation into it's reliability. I understand Bosch has addressed this issue, but how well may be a question.

One thing is for certain, it's a beast of a towing truck

I believe the payload is about 4000, towing capacity 15900, and combined gross is 23500. The 12300 is I think for the gas. I have a 13 supercrew 4x4 diesel and get around 20 on the highway, 18 just running around, 11 to 12 towing a fifth wheel, 12500lbs and 60 to 65 mph. A service cost me about 150, this only needs to be done every 8 to 10000 miles, it does take 13 quarts of oil. The DEF holds 5 gallons and last about 7000 miles. I only have 11000 miles, but am very happy, power is fantastic.
