It's quite simple really; they don't need to. With a 6 speed there is more than enough gears to keep the Dmax in it's torque band.
For the billionth time: Gears don't make power, just torque, and torque don't get you up the hill faster, it just gets you up the hill.
If you want to get up the hill faster than the other guy you need to make HP and lots of it.
Ford had WAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY more torque than Chevy in the last test. They only had a few more horses than Chevy but they were either playing fast and loose with the figures or their tranny ate a ton of power; one or the other. Couple that with a junk turbo and you will end up being first place looser. :B
It's funny how people say they don't want anymore horsepower but crow who won the latest shootout. :R
Fords turbo can't push enough air at high altitude to make equivalent power do to the smaller diameter turbo hence the reason for the 36mm unit. :B
Hence the reason for the: "Couple that with a junk turbo and you will end up being first place looser. :B"
No worries Troy. Maybe Ford will get it right the second time round. Errr, third time. This is now the 3rd gen turbo for the 6.7! :p
"I don't think so Tim" If you can remember that show. :p
Ford has used the same twin turbine turbo from '11-'14 models and the '15 will use a single larger turbine.
I will say the twin turbine turbo doesn't shine in high altitudes or exhaust brake (BTW neither are needed here in Texas), but let me tell you it shines with very little turbo lag and the truck takes off like a rocket really quick with or without a load. :B
