I've never thought that you need to break even getting a diesel. I always figured it was either a necessity because you're towing heavy or it could be like getting a fully loaded truck. You don't need it, you want it. No one asks someone that buys a Lariat or some other high-end truck how long will it take to recoup the cost for those leather seats.
JMO but I agree with the idea that if you need a DRW you probably need a diesel with the exception that maybe you're hauling a truck camper or maybe a golf cart in the bed or whatever else that would push the limits of a SRW and heavy tongued TT.
