This is actually pretty cool, very well developed technology now. Remember there was a time when the thought of a turbo charger was a scary thought from a maintenance standpoint. And yet look at whats Ford has done.
The 5.3 the issues you describe were inherent between 2007-2009. The issues were fixed for the 2010s. Some of the oil consumption issues were not due to the DOD but to poor oil flow design. My '08 has fouling #1 plug. The fix is to replace the valve cover with a redesigned one for that head. For $7 a plug, I just replace it every 6 months. And a quart of oil a month doesn't bother me in the slightest.
