6500 lb with 2001 Expedtion- 4x4 5.4, Adequate?

Just started using a new (to me) 74 Boles Aero 31-footer. Dry weight 5900 lb. Plus people and junk might be north of 6500 lb

TV is 2001 Expedition fully loaded, 4X4 with tow package and 16" tires. I beleive rated capcity is 8100 lb.

So it works on paper.

Is this combination adequate for a lot of travel or will i wish i had more truck?

As it is now I am working through some sway and WD issues so it's hard to tell how it's towing as I am going kinda slow.

Same truck was wonderful with a 27-foot Boles Aero. I think i've added 1700 lb.

thanks

Depends.Change out your tires as you said, dial in the WD when you get time you don't have now and evaluate the adequacy of the Expy.
Terrain and driver comfort level (white knuckles-or lack of) will be the determining factor.

I tow a TT a little heavier than yours with an '03 4x4 Expy with the 5.4L and I wish I had more torque, wheelbase, and tow capacity.
"I" wish I had more truck but it's not in the cards right now so I get by.
Hook it up and see how she rides.
  • We have a 2005 Expedition 8900# tow capacity and 14,500# GCWR and tow a 28' 4800 lb. dry. I've checked the weights on our way out 1/2 doz. times and found trlr. axles at 5400,rated at 7000. but it puts my TV axles near max.at 4,200 and 2900#. I have plenty of room for more weight in the trailer but can't take advantage of it without putting my axles and/or TV gvwr over. I have the 5.4 and 3.73 rear with Reese Dual Cam and E rated tires, it pulls like a dream even in the mountains.
  • Plenty of motor. but you do need to work on that hitch adjustment. Could it be your tires?

And BTW. I had a 2002 Expe, 5.4, and 3.55 rear. The tow cap was 6800lbs
  • We had an new 2004 Expedition with the smaller 4.6 V-8 towing a Jayco TT weighing around 5400lbs and was adaquate on level ground..struggled on hills.

Then we went with a new 5.4L V-8 and it was actually a great engine..on the same mountain and hills that the 4.6L gave me white knuckles on...the 5.4 was confident and had great reserve power. Even when we went to a slightly longer/heavier Jayco TT that 5.4 did fine. Actually no complaints!

And when we bought a new F250 Diesel and realized that we could now not only pull bigger...but also now could graduate to a 5th wheel. ;)
  • WD is a 20 year old Reese system with no sway control. I need to upgrade the tires and do a proper setup before i can eliminate the WD issues but that will take weekend time I do not have.

My question is about the adequacy of the Expedition with that much trailer for extended travel.
