A Couple Problems with 2007 Ram 2500

Last winter while snowbirding we had a couple problems that caused the engine to completely shut down. The check engine light came on and the overhead console
Had the message see dealer now. We had it towed to the dealer and they diagnosed it as a fuel pressure valve. The second time we were towing on our way home and it
Happened a second time. We were in Ely Nv this time and had it towed to the dealer. This time it was diagnosed as the fuel pump. It was replaced and it ran fine the rest
Of the way home.
Can these really be the cause of the engine shutting down?
Are these common problems with these trucks?
What would cause these failures?
I was told by adding a diesel additive or ATF to the fuel it would lubricate and maybe prevent fuel pump failure? Any truth to that?
Truck only has 53K miles on it.
