Last winter while snowbirding we had a couple problems that caused the engine to completely shut down. The check engine light came on and the overhead consoleHad the message see dealer now. We had it towed to the dealer and they diagnosed it as a fuel pressure valve. The second time we were towing on our way home and it Happened a second time. We were in Ely Nv this time and had it towed to the dealer. This time it was diagnosed as the fuel pump. It was replaced and it ran fine the rest Of the way home.Can these really be the cause of the engine shutting down?Are these common problems with these trucks?What would cause these failures?I was told by adding a diesel additive or ATF to the fuel it would lubricate and maybe prevent fuel pump failure? Any truth to that?Truck only has 53K miles on it.Thanks

Sounds as if at some point you got some bad fuel. Has your fuel filter been changed regularly? I don't use additives, and certainly wouldn't put 2-cycle oil in my fuel tank. Good luck.

I agree with Cool. Looks like you got ahold of some bad fuel.How many times have you changed the fuel filter in 50K?BTW, ATF belongs in the transmission and for sure not in the fuel system of a modern TD engine.

Fuel filter has been changed at each of the last two oil changes. Both oil changes have been done in the last 15 months.

gas,I use diesel Kleen in my 2005 dodge diesel from time to time.72K miles, no fuel related problems.I use Baldwin oil and fuel filters. I also use the 4" thick std air filter.so far so good, did the repair shops have any suggestions why the early fuel related failures?

Maxwell11 the repair shop thought it was probably due to some bad fuel as others have stated. Not sure where I would've picked it up. We refuel mostly at name brand places but that's not always possible. But isn't that the job of the fuel filter to eliminate fuel impurities? Guess we need to be more careful in the future.Would the fuel pump fail right after a fill up or 1 or 2 tanks later?

I have a 2007.5 Dodge 6.7L CTD as well. Numerous emission systems problems in the 1st 2 years of ownership. Replaced the turbo twice due to soot clogging it up as well as many other fixes, reprogramming etc.

2007.5 was the first year for the 6.7L and its emissions system. There were a lot of growing pains with it, lots of buy backs etc. After the problems seem to be resolved with mine I opted to keep it and got Dodge to give me a 100K $0 deductible extended warranty. I've not had to use it and now have 75K. No fuel related issues.

ATF has fraction modifiers in it that are NOT good for diesel injection pumps. An old wifes tale that should not be put in any diesel engine.

I run a quart on Wally World TC-3 2 cycle oil in my 2001.5 Dodge/Cummins. Would choose something else for a newer truck. It would be something the manufacturer would document as a product to use.

Lift pumps problems on Dodge diesels are very common across many model years.

from what I hear, in Europe BOSCH puts chrome sleaves in the high pressure pumps to deal with the fuel

I agree as well. And to add to that, diesel fuel should not cost 50 cents a gallon more than gas.

The good thing is. My truck is getting 23 mpg right now empty. There is not a gas engine with the same power that can come close to that.

The problem I have with using ATF as an additive, is ATF is specifically designed to resist high temperatures and burning and is not designed to be combusted. When combusted ATF will leave behind ash, heavy metals, and other deposits. Additives such as Stanadyne and others will provide lubricity without leaving any residue since they are formulated to be combusted and are designed to burn clean as well as increase the lubricity of diesel."

That being said, I now own a 2011 F250 6.7 Powerstaoke and mix 1 large Diesel Kleen and 1 gallon of 2 stroke oil and add 1qt of the mixture to every tank. I wouldn't ever recommend adding ATF to the fuel tank of any diesel truck, especially one with a DPF. Bad idea.

A purposly built diesel fuel additive, yes, ATF? No.
