Age of trailer tires?

I received the following response from Maxxis regarding my question about what would be a reasonable date stamped on a new tire purchase.

Thank you for your request. If you buy the ST trailer tire directly from our e-store, we provide tires that are two years old or less from the week of manufacture. If you opt to buy the tires from one of our distributors or dealers, we have no control over what the production date of the tire will be for the tires that they have in stock .

Best regards,

Your Maxxis Support Team

I was surprised by the answer expecting something along the lines of a couple of months. If a tire is 2 years old when new isn't its useful life reduced already by 1/3 if they should be replaced after 6 years, a common recommendation by tire manufacturers?
  • Carlisle Radial Trail RH Has been the best performing ST tire for some years. It is speed rated to 81 mph and, if you buy them at Discount Tire (a stock item), they will have a five year warranty.
  • Maxxis has been the best available ST tire for several years and warrants their tire longer (5 years) than most ST tire makers. 2 years is too old, 6 months would be no issue at all for me.

Look for a different brand of tire! I have had great tire experiences with Goodyear "G" "or "E" rated tires.

I had Goodyear Marathon tires before. They were made in the US and were fine. I ordered them again at first but the ones offered by Discount Tire were made in China with a 1 year old date stamp. I called Goodyear and they were not able to tell me where the Marathons are currently made.

    I would buy American.

That would be my preference but I couldn't find any US made 15" ST tires. What have I missed?

  • I always demand less than 6 months old. I replace trailer tires at 3-5 years regardless of mileage.
