Almost settled on Colorado's Front Range

We'll I've been here for a little over a month and while I haven't made it into the mountains yet I look longingly at them everyday! I don't have a lot of extra time right now but would love any suggestions on a destination close to Brighton, CO that I could run up to for a night or two? Dispersed or campgrounds I don't care...just want to get into the hills!

  • Thanks for all the replies…in regards to the Estes Park area and RMNP, I know there are designated campgrounds, but are there dispersed places too or are you restricted to stay within the campgrounds? Thanks again and always willing to meet up with anyone in the CO area to do one of these mountain excursions together (mini TC rally:))!
  • I second Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park are great. After living in CO for over 27 years I think for a short trip it would hard to beat. Go through the park come into Grand Lake and then on to Granby. Then you can head back to Denver if you are running out of time. I would try to go through the park during the week because this area can be very crowded on weekends. Might be able to spot some elk in the park also.
  • You have dozens of options for a day trip for a couple of days from Brighton.

You can easily go to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain Nationsl Park area, just West of Loveland for a day and night or two. From Brighton it is not far to Fort Collins where you can take Colo Highway 14 up the Pouder Canyon where there are about a dozen camp grounds along the river.

You can also take I-70 West from Denver to Dillon-Silverthorn area, or take US 40 to Granby, Grand Lake area, and even on to Steamboat Springs area. There are more camping places in all of the mountains just West of you then you can visit in a couple of years.
  • With your rig I would head up to Rainbow Lakes outside of Nederland. Bring your hiking and fishing gear.
