Awning mold?

any ideas of how to prevent mold on the rollup awnings?? We've always rolled it up dry, but I'm guessing the rain goes up inside it while it was stored.

Any ideas for cleaning, and preventing the mold? Can you spray a protectant on it??

We had a pop up for nine years, and managed to keep the awning and canvas mold free. Now with a TT I'm fighting mold :(.
  • Fully extend awning

Using a spray bottle with mixture of bleach/water ( couple tablespoons )
wet top section across roller as you slowly roll it back up.....dripping wet

Then sit back, relax, have cold one, read a magazine.....after 30 mintues fully extend awning and rinse off with hose----both sides top/bottom
Use soft brush on any heavy stained spots.

Mold only grows on the dirt......not on the material so just keep it clean and mold/mildew should be minimal.
    Bleach/water solution if it reoccurs
  • Tilex mold and mildew.
I don't know why but this stuff works so well but it does. Even better than a strong bleach mixture and TSP.
Just apply it, roll up the awning for an hour or two, unroll and rinse. Touch up any spots left but I doubt they're will be any. This stuff took out stains I'd had for years - and without scrubbing.
  • 3M Magic Eraser works well, but you have to add elbow grease!

2x. This is the ONLY way I do my awnings. When we unrolled the awning for our March trip to South Carolina, there was no black anywhere. I was amazed. I've always advocated that Mr. Clean Magic Eraser leaves chemical on the awning to stops mold regrowth. This year, I'm more than a believer!
  • For previous posts search this Forum for `awning' then search the results for `mold'.
Here is my explanation. The awning folds are not air tight so during the day the air in the folds heats up and expands. At night when it is cooler the air in the folds contracts and brings the moist air with it. The next day the cycle repeats BUT not all of the sucked in moisture is expelled unless the awning is open. If that explanation is true there is no hope for a dry rolled up awning. Those awnings that have a solid cover over them when rolled up would not have as much temperature increase (not as much air expansion) so they should not suck in as much moisture as those that are exposed.
  • Thanks for the info. I think I'll try the spray and roll up and have a beer method ;)
  • I liberally sprinkle Goldbond medicated powder on my awning as I roll it up for long term storage. I actually use a generic store brand, but make sure it includes Zinc Oxide in the ingredients! Zinc Oxide inhibits mold growth - it's used in paint as a mold inhibitor. As far as cleaning... elbow grease!
  • I use Mold Armor on everything including the awning. Spray it on while washing the TT and wait several minutes. Come back and no mold - spray with water. works on the rubber molding around outer storade access doors, propane cover, etc. Get at Lowes, Walmart, Home Depot.
