Backflip or roll n lock tonneau cover

I'm looking for a tonneau cover for my shortbed superduty. I have a sliding fifthwheel hitch that I would like to keep out of site when traveling. I'm looking at the bakflip vp or the roll n lock. I like both because I can keep the portion forward of my hitch covered to keep firewood dry. If anyone has had experience with either of these, could you please post your experiences. Thanks

I have a Pace Edwards Full Metal Jackrabbit roll cover. Similar to the Roll and Lock. But mine is on a long bed. The cover is all metal rather than vinyl covered. Very strong. Had over two inches of ice/sleet on it last year and no damage.

This is my second. On my first on my previous truck I caught my 6 yr old nephew jumping on it like a trampoline. No damage to that one either.

I HAD a Roll N Lock on my last truck.... Moved to the Pace Edwards Full Metal on this truck.... loved the first , love the second even more ! It's the only way to go in my book if towing....
  • I have a TRUXEDO roll up. Velcro. Looks good and covers just fine. When a snow storm is on the way, I roll it up (has 2 straps. I can use the weight of the snow IN the bed...we all know how great a pickup works in the snow.....lolol
  • I have the BakFlip which has worked out great. When towing I fold it to the last panel behind the hitch. The covers rails are below the truck bed so no clearance issue. Very easy to install.

The Bakflip like most folding covers is not completely water proof. Some drips make if through mostly in the corners. I could seal it easily with some caulking but not a big issue for me. Mostly wanted it to keep rain and dirt off the hitch when not in use.

  • I had a Roll N Lock on my last truck which was a Ford Superduty. It worked OK, but I found the latching mechanism and pull strap to be a PITA. It also developed lines in the vinyl cover that I could not get off.

I now have a Retrax on my current truck and like it MUCH better. As mentioned previously it locks in any position, is much easier to open and close than the Roll N Lock and looks great. I would highly recommend one.
  • I have a Retrax Pro and I have no issues at all. They are a little pricey and it locks in any position,
  • I've used the Access roll-up cover on my last three trucks (one with a fifth wheel hitch), always waterproof, inexpensive and out of the way when needed. They're not lockable, but for me that has not been a problem. The downside for you might be the firewood. They really should be fully open when traveling with a fifth wheel.
  • Have had both and the backflip is the only way to go. It is a hard cover and will support a person walking on it, so it will support any snow load you could possibly get.
  • On tight turns the lower portion of the pin box might touch the tonneau cover rails that sit inside the truck bed edges. If so, it will hamper the closing of a rolling cover but probably not on a Bakflip. Ask me how I know... If I had to do it over, I'd get the Bakflip as I had one on a prior truck but pulled a TT.
  • I never used one, but over the winter, someone put a post and photo of their truck and camper in the snow after they got a couple feet. The camper had no snow on it, the back of the truck had 2 feet of snow on the cover of the truck bed. He made a comment about wondering how much snow the cover would support.

Something to think about and ask before making a final decision. How much weight can it support. I see you are from Mass. You get snow! Which one can carry the heavier load unsupported? That would make my decision.
