- blt2skiModeratorOne will also find that the motor type depends upon the engine bay too. Locomotives use a V motor, trucks, some boats I motors are better. Even the pancake motor has a place, as do vertical vs horizontal vs circular piston motors for some applications!
One can make short or long strokes depending upon the which setup works best for what application also.
Reality is, can I get the best motor for the job persay! with the drive train to do the job I need to do!

Would have been nice to see the tach's of each truck during those runs. The max. rpm in the V-8's is much higher than the I-6, thus so is the max. hp, thus so is speed. I am not running anyone up a hill period. 18 wheelers with 80k running 20 mph maybe different, those trucks I will probably pass, but not with wide open throttle and second gear.
Actuaslly it doesn't quite work that linear.
Diesel burn is more a controlled burn and expansion of gases and less explosive than gasoline. Sooo the longer stroke diesel gives that fuel burn more time to extract horsepower from the burn while relatively short stroke V8's cut that off before all power BTU's can be extracted but making up for it by having more power pulses in the same time frame. Whew!
Torque being king while towing is the reason why the big honchos (classes 6-8) stuck with long stroke V8's and also why MOST large marine diesels have also stuck with the longer stroke engines.
That is not to say V8's don't have an edge during certain periods of the power cycle though and the more recent diesel designs are capitalizing on those to a degree never before seen.
The issue of auto transmission design along with heat dissipation from that auto transmission will now assume preemminence over what the engine is capable of. Making a transmission capable to use all of that power through a broader band AND getting rid of the resultant heat from that efficiency without transferring it back into coolant will be a test of engineer's 'outside the box' thinking skills.
All three of them are giving you choices that just a couple of decades ago would not have been believed possible. Whichever truck you choose, consider yourselves fortunate. - NC_HaulerExplorer

It's just one of the VERY LAST criterium "I" look for when purchasing a truck to tow with is "How fast" it can get to the top of a mountain..don't get me wrong, I don't want to be struggling in a 50-55 mph zone only topping out at 20-30 mph before "that's all she's got", to get to the top of a mountain, (and I tow in a lot of mountains), but as long as I can run at speed limit, or a little under, I'm happy.
I don't care about who's fastest up the grade either. Obviously! However, what the test did show is that all three ran balls out towing 20k lbs up the grade with no failures or hiccups. That is the criteria I'm interested in. All three proved very capable.

Interesting video comps,i was surprised how much faster the Ram was than the Duramax, when we look back at the king of the hill and how the duramax dominated, its hard to believe how the Ram with still less H.P. AND ONLY 50 MORE LBS of torque could perform at that level shown.Maybe the ASIN is putting it to the ground better or the Ram is way underrated at 385HP.That new Ford would have to be 450/900 to perform at that level, would be interesting to see a independent test to see if it was tricked up for the pull, very impressive if it wasn,t !
ONe of the things re HP/torque NOT talke about, is what hits the ground at the rear wheels! Some tranny's like the allison take up some 60 hp from the flywheel ratings. Others like GM's 4l80e, only took some 25hp. So assuming one could have either or, and wants speed, the 4l80 would be the better one due to less drive train loss! Something not talked about a lot!
Not goign to say what is going on between the three brands as I do not know those numbers per say, GM a bit better as I buy them more.

You can make your own decision about. the video. I'm explaining how we grouped and tested the trucks.
It was fun to watch. If the Ram would have inched out the other two, our local Ram fans would have broke out the nachos and cheese in celebration! If the GM would have wheezed out a victory, our local GM geezer would have dropped his cane with excitement! Some folks know how to have fun, some don't.:B
In 100% agreement with you...BUT...do you think we would have EVER seen this video 'IF" Ford had placed 2nd. or 3rd??? Don't think so.....I really don't think Mike would be here now or that this would have ever been posted by a Ford owner, probably a GMC/Chevy or Ram owner, but again, if Ford had lost, doubt we'd be here right now....
But it's boiled down to name calling again, as these type post always do...if GM had won, it would have been posted and thrown in the face of Ford and Ram....if Ram had won, it would be thrown in the face of Ford and GM owners...It's what human beings do, grab a cause and hang on no matter what...nothing wrong with that, it's obviously what we do, right, wrong or indifferent....

NC,
You may as well break out the nachos and cheese and celebrate anyway. The 2015 Ford can't even be purchased till spring so, right now, your Ram could very well be the quickest to the top of the mountain. By spring you should be ready for a new truck anyway... maybe then you'll finally be able to justify a Ford.:B
:B, nah, though possibly not believable, This truck IS my last one...at least for some time....(got it all planned out to August of 2016:))...
All kidding aside, all three are great trucks, I'm just not in that big of a hurry to get to a place when towing.
I'm not much into nachos and cheese, and you know what happens as soon as one starts to celebrate something....Murphy's law:) - 4x4ordExplorer III

Gotta love the butthurt fanboys; results don't go my way the test was obviously flawed; results go my way look how awesome my truck is.
So what name calling would you have fallen into or posted about if RAM had performed their own test and the Ram would have won? Doubt you would have even posted, or maybe you would have stated THAT test too, was flawed:)
