- dadmomhExplorerWe always used the blue stuff...whatever brand. After listening to Chuck_S mention Odorlos over a couple of years I decided to try it....also really hate the smell of the blue stuff. Odorlos is awesome. We buy the bucket of the dry, add 2 scoops and plenty of water to start (never leave the tank dry) and add an enzyme. No odors, no problem. Also use the lemony smelling grey tank chemical - can't remember the brand. Both CW and Walmart sell it. Use it mostly in hot weather or especially if we're fixing anything fishy. Have never had any odor problems.
The Geo method is popular and apparently works well. I would be concerned about using products that are not specifically made for RV use....might or might not have a bad effect of the seals and would rather not find out. BTW, we NEVER use the "special" TP in the RV section....just use plain old white stuff....usually one of the cheaper brands and it does its job and breaks down easily. - thomasmnileExplorer

Has anyone had the Chems go off after sitting in storage for a month or two? Should I just leave a clean empty tank until ready to go out again?
When heading home from a trip, I leave a couple gallons of water in the black tank (with Odorlos added). Experience has taught me that no matter how much you flush the black tank, you aren't gonna remove every last bit of poop and paper in it. Figure the water and the Odorlos may lessen the odds of the dreaded "poop pyramid",since the chemical is supposed to liquefy the waste. - MostlyOKExplorerWow talk about a Duh moment! Thanks for mentioning the fan! OF course that would pull the odors up. I had not thought of that before. We have had problems with odor. We have a solar vent fan in the pipe and use tank treaments but still have "Broccoli Fart" odor coming out the tank.
I will try the bath fan off method and see how that works.

If you have odor problems then you have a leak. I live in my travel trailer out of town 3 nights a week and I don't use anything for the tank other than water and I've never had any odors either unless I forget and flush while the vent fan is running.
- MikesrExplorerI've used a little bit of a product called Odor Ban available at SAMs club.

I have been using Odoless, green stuff and I get it at Camping World. This stuff is awesome. There is NO chemical odor or other odors at all. We used it in hot sun at the beach, works great. We have new Jayco Whitehawk.
I have been looking at that...Thanks for the mini review.. - spike99Explorer.
When I towed TTs for years and years, I never used any chemicals within TT's black water tank. When towing, we simply camped and before pulling out of CG, we dumped our tank. We never towed with stuff in our black or grey water tanks. Like many, I never want to get into an accident and a TT's tank leaks.
At my current seasonal site, the CG owner's "pumper guy" dumps our TT's tank every Tuesdays (or Thursdays - for rain day). And in the fall before winter storage, I simply rinse inside the TT's black tanks with a long wand (down its toliet opening). re: - click here -
To this day, I've yet to buy any chemicals for its black tank. Only cost is a special RV tank rinse wand. $10-$15 dollar range.
Forgot to mention... When going into the bathroom, leave the high RPM fan OFF. Seriously. The roof vent fan is turned OFF. After flushing and washing the hands, then manually turn the roof vent ON, and do shut the door (after leaving the bathroom room). If one turns the fan on BEFORE flushing the toliet, the fan's suction will suck the stick upwards - out of the holding tank (re: up the open 3" toliet hole opening). And, this immediately stinks the bathroom up. Always turn the ceiling fan ON (and keep door closed) "after" leaving the small bathroom room. This works best for us...
. - old_guyExplorerI have tried them all. and if you think I'm lying come and see the bottle collection I have. found the best stuff that really works and I have no smell what so ever. it is called "Happy Camper". it comes out of Oregon and bar none it works keeping the small down and when you dump, it doesn't smell either.I stumbled across this stuff on the Internet and ordered it. it costs about 50 cents a scoop but I would pay $1.00 for it. look up happy camper on the web and get some
- The_LogansExplorerHi,
Try to avoid anything with formaldihyde in it. It kills the bacteria that breaks down the solid wast, and keeps holding tanks and septic systems from working as they are designed to. And, of course, it's hard on the enviornment.
Use any treatment with enzymes in it, as they help break down the waste, which in turn helps keep your tank and pipes from clogging up.
We like the enzyme treatments with either mint or lemon deoderant added to it.
