Buying a travel trailer out of my home state.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum or not.

This is technically a hypothetical question. Lets say that I live in New York State (I actually do) and I end up purchasing a Travel Trailer in Maine. It is my belief that I'd have to register the TT in NY since we live there and that I'd also have to pay New York State sales tax instead of Maine's sales tax. Am I correct?
  • You will not only pay NY Sales Tax but you will pay whatever the Tax rate is in the County in which you reside. That holds true even when buying in NY but a different County from where you reside. I bought my 5th Wheel in Erie County NY and I live in Chautauqua County. I paid my County's Sales Tax rate of 8% instead of the 8.75% rate where I purchased my camper.
  • We purchased used in Rhode Island, paid sales tax on it when we registered it in Virginia. We purchased new from a dealer in Ohio and had to register it temporarily in Ohio (so they can get a bit out of it), but didn't have to pay sales tax, just a $200 registration fee. Then, when we tagged it in Virginia, we had to pay Va tax to register it and get tags.
  • I think you'd pay Maine states sales tax, then when you register in NY, you'd pay whatever difference between NY sales and the selling state.

That's how it worked when I bought in Wisconsin and brought it back to Texas.
  • I bought 2 TTs in PA and had to pay sales tax in NJ when I titled it in NJ.
  • I live in New York State and purchased a used trailer in Pennsylvania. To register in NYS all I needed was the title and bill of sale. No problems.
  • we live in PA and purchased our last 2 RV's from NJ... We had to pay PA sales tax when we took the RV home...

On edit... To be clear, we PAID NO sales tax to the selling dealer in New Jersey, ALL sales tax was to the tag company in PA when we took the paperwork to register them in PA...
  • sounds right,BUT call your local dmv and get the facts and any other paper work you might need every state has there own rules.
