Buying a TV in Canada & bringing it back to the US?

Hey Everyone,

Unfortunately we lost our tow vehicle in an accident. I am shopping for a new (to me) one. I have been looking at '03 or newer Dodge 3500's and by accident wound up looking at ads from BC.

What a surprise! Last I looked the Canadian dollar was near par with the us dollar. When I checked this morning I saw $1.00CDN=$0.72USD...

Advertised truck prices looked pretty similar but with the exchange rate they are looking like quite the bargain.

Does anyone out there have any firsthand knowledge about bringing a Canadian truck back to the US and getting it titled & registered?

Thanks

Steve

  • Update:

I showed up at Customs and waited in line for over an hour. Not too bad considering that there were 4 people in line in front of me and only 11 Customs agents to assist them.......

When I got to the counter I handed over the purchase docs and the agent looked them over and sent me back to sit and wait while he (finished his cookies) went out to inspect the truck. He came back and mumbled something I couldn't quite understand except I heard "EPA" amidst the mumbles. I asked him if he had seen the "Complies with US EPA regulations" sticker? He said no and I offered to show it to him. We went back out and popped the hood. I showed him the sticker. We went back in and he typed on his computer for a bit, printed a form, stamped it and sent me on my way.

Licensing was straight forward. I have my plates and expect my title in the mail shortly.
  • I received the following reply from Chrysler:

Thank you for contacting us concerning an Import/Export question. We
    appreciate your inquiry.

As a matter of company policy, we are unable to supply written
specifications for importing/exporting of vehicles. In some instances,
vehicles have been modified and are no longer compliant for the market
for which they were built. Once the vehicle leaves the manufacturer, we
cannot be sure what the current condition of the vehicle is, and we have
no way of determining if the vehicle still meets the same
specifications/requirements as when it was produced. Each country has
specific requirements and regulations that must be met before a vehicle
can be sold in the country.

I recommend you contact an import/export company that specializes in
assisting owners with getting their vehicle compliant for the market in
    which they live.

I am sorry I cannot provide you with a more favorable reply.

I think if you look again you will see the dollar at $0.79US. The banks will charge you around $.03 to convert to CND so you are looking at around $0.82. I Brought a truck from the US to Canada and it was no problem. Search the internet and you will find all the info you need.

    Thanks for the reply.

I think US to Canada is a bit easier than Canada to US. As I understand it some safety and emissions regulations are more relaxed or were implemented later in Canada.

I have been on the EPA, CBP and NTSB websites and it is a bit confusing.

A call to Chrysler corporation with the VIN number and ask them if it is compliant in the US might be a place to start.

I have contacted them by email and am waiting for a reply.

  • U.S. import information: Clicky

Obtain the complete VIN and have a Chrysler dealer make sure there are no outstanding safety recalls.

Do a lien search at a BC Government Agent.

Insist on doing a safety and emission system inspection prior to buying the truck if such inspections are required by your state or federally.

Canadian vehicles do not come with a Certificate of Origin to prove title to the vehicle. The registered owner is the owner. You will be given a copy of the previous owner's registration and a Bill of Sale when you purchase the vehicle.
