Buying Truck few years before 5th wheel

Looking for retirement in 2023. We're thinking of going to full time and doing travel that long work hours have kept us from doing.

Looking to getting 2019 F350D. Wife only drives a few miles to work. This is one or two years earlier than I had originally planned, but a bit concerned with the reported 10 speed transmission in 2020.

5th wheel sizes we're looking at, is near F250 capacity, so thinking F350 is the better option.

While not sure 4wd is needed, although living in MI right now, it would be handy. I've been told the 4wd is required for resale. Figuring 4dr with 6.5' bed.

Thoughts on the strategy to buy the truck this far in advance of the 5th wheel?

Hi. With the cost of a good two vehicle and the cost of a good 5th wheel . Spreading out cost would be a good option. Jim2007.

Or take the money you would pay for payments and put into an interest bearing account and pay cash in 5 yrs and have a new truck with full warranty and no depreciation.
If you don’t need it now, I would wait. They will only get better with 5 yrs of new technology.

    x2.
  • You can violate the “buy or select the TT/5er first, then select the TV” rule but do so at your peril. Do your figuring, looking and strategy in 2023. Be not afraid but rather excitingly look forward.
  • Sounds like a good plan to move up to the 1 ton F350. Don't know if you are considering a single rear wheel or dual rear wheel, but I would seriously look at the dually. Best to have a little more than a little less truck! I would also suggest an 8' bed over the shorter bed so that you don't have to have to use a slider fifth wheel hitch.

  • The way new trans have performed lately I would wait for the 10 speed myself. The higher number of gears don't seem to be hindering longevity or strength at all. Their driveability is better than their predecessors and maint. intervals are better if not more expensive in some cases.
I'll be in the market in the next 5~7 years as well and will be watching for one of these mega-geared monsters.
I am leaning towards a new Ram but if they don't have an 8 to 10 speed trans by then I'll go elsewhere.
