Can the drivers and passengers hear the clatter of engine noise while driving down the highway? I am talking about the older diesels, the ones that sound like a Briggs & Stratton engine with the muffler removed. Or do they have extra sound insulation to quiet the cabs? Obviously, the newer models do hot make nearly as much noise.

They make a silver sound proofing material that all the stereo installers use. They put it in the doors, roof, etc. You can google it to get the brands.

My 2005 Powerstroke came with extra insulation. I barely hear the engine. (I barely hear anything anymore.) I could carry on a conversation with the passenger while towing up a mountain. Much better than the older trucks. I drove a semi back in the 70's and you couldn't hear the passenger unless they yelled. Probably why I can't hear today.

Depends on your definition of older model. I had a modified 96' Dodge Cummins. When pulling a load up the hill my wife learned not to talk to me. My 2006 Dodge Cummins is alot quieter with a heavier load.

Our 2001 Ram with the Cummins rattle box, came from the factory with extra sound insulation. Yes can carry on a conversation, Radio doesn't need to be on Max volume, it still makes some noise.The 2002 was the last of the really noisy Cummins (it is relative), up until then they had single shot mechanical injectors (Big Bang Theory). In 2003 they went to Common Rail electronic injectors.

When I'm pulling and driving down the highway the engine sounds about the same as a gas engine.
