I have the same issue with my GMC and new Forest River. The truck has the factory integrated brake controller. I set the gain all the way up, and the trailer brakes will not lock up. I went to the dealer twice and nothing is wrong, so they say. I got the same talk about the heavier trailer often will not allow the brakes to lock.
After talking to a few folks at a local campground, i found that several guys have the same issue. One guy gave me something to try and said that is what he did.....
I got it going 70+ mph on the interstate and got off at a long fairly strait exit. Using only the lever on the brake controller, i was able able to safely stop the whole rig with a couple of hundred feet to spare. I feathered the lever on the controller rather than jamming it, and I was pleasantly surprised how well it all stopped. The truck weighs 6600 pounds and the trailer is about 8000, so the trailer brakes along stopped the entire 14,600 pound load with little effort.
I can always feel the trailer brakes working during normal driving, so I can only assume all is well. The whole rig stops well at traffic lights though the 2011 GMC brakes are awsome compared to other trucks I have owned.
Again, I was really surprised at the number of folks that actually do have the same issues with heavy trailers.
