the motor isn't stuffed under the firewall either. I can do all the work on my 97. The new ones you cannot.
I can work on my 2014 truck. Just because one person is ignorant to new stuff doesn't mean everyone is.
In the case of the newer Fords, you can’t do much without lifting the cab off the frame.
New trucks are awesome but I also feel it’s crazy to drop that much money on one unless you’ve really got tons of disposable income.
100% correct so you have a built in labor cost to do anything engine wise. One reason I like the Dodge / Cummins, the engine is accessable.
On the new short hood Fords, you cannot even get to the turbo without pulling the cab and the engine appears to be a nightmare of hoses and pipes and all sorts of stuff that looks to be a PITA to do anything with.
Fine when new but I have to wonder how that will play out as they get older and need work... and they will because it's an engine and they wear.
With my OBS, the engine is out front of the firewall. Admittedly, It's hard to access the rear passangers side valve cover bolts (I just replaced the injection harness on both sides), but it's doable. Same with the head bolts. On a newer (non OBS truck) you won't be pulling a head because you cannot remove the rear passanger side head bolts without pulling the cab.
If I didn't get 'A' plan I would have bought a Dodge just because of the maintenance factor.
Finally, on the new Fords, about all you can do is change the oil and fuel filters any engine work or emissions related stuff takes serious electronic diagnostic tools, not something your everyday oil changer possesses.
I'll say the same for the Duramax. Stuffed under the firewall and a electronic nightmare.
My buddy went to change his fuel filter on his Lariat, broke the plastic push on fitting and had to get a new one from the dealer. Cost 80 bucks and had to wait for it. Not my idea of maintenance friendly at all.
Finally, most dealers charge in the excess of 100 bucks an hour on non warranty related labor so I guess if you are flush with money, it's no problem. I'm not. Flat rate Ford manual says 4 hours to lift the cab, that is 400 bucks before anything happens.
I'll keep my old OBS no emissions truck, thank you.
