Carpenter Ants

Over the last few days I have been tearing apart the front nose of the camper becuase of a small leak near the front drip rail...I noticed a bunch of carpenter ants in the front near the rotted wood. I am assuming they are there because they like wet rotted wood. My question is that after I replace the wood is it okay for me to "bomb" the trailer to kill any that have made it anywhere else that I have not seen? Or has anyone delt with this another way?

Thanks
Bill

Carpenter ants create satellite colonies which are nest that are completely separated from the parent nest. Bombing might kill the nest you can see, but it may not reach a satellite nest. An exterminator would probably be your best bet.

You could always try to bait them. I've had very good results with Terro Liquid Ant Killer. It's a mix of a sweet liquid and borax and not very dangerous since the primary ingredient is borax. The ants suck it up the sweet liquid then share it with other ants in the colony and on the trail. The borax causes gas that they can't get rid of and this eventually kills them. The borax works slowly, like 1 to 3 days, so it gives the ants plenty of time to share it amongst the entire colony. I've taken down an entire colony with just a few drops. It's kind of fun watching them all gather around and eating. They gather around the liquid like it's a drive in. It's worked well on crazy ants which are terrible down here and incredibly difficult to get rid of. The only caveat is that it only works on ants attracted to sweets. It doesn't work well for ants that are attracted to proteins like grease ants. It should work for carpenter ants.
  • I had this problem a few years ago. I keep my trailer plugged in all the time and the ants were climbing up the power cord to get inside the trailer. Their home was in a nearby tree. I frequently sprayed the power cord and opening with whatever insecticide I had and sprayed the tree, too. Never got rid of the ant's in the tree until I cut it down and burned it. The insecticide on the power cord kept them out until then. Some of the ants inside simply died and no more ants came in. I never bombed the trailer. I don't think I'd like being in it after that with insecticide all over everything. They do make a bait for carpenter ants, but I've never had much luck with it.

Find out how they are getting in and spray a good ant killer all along their trail. If you can find and kill the source, even better.
  • They will likely go away once you get rid of the wet wood, especially if you store it with no food or water in it. Carpenter ants are hard to kill, they do not go for ant bait. I had them in my house. Chances are the one sin you trailer are a sub colony. Do you have lots of trees aroudn where you park it?
  • There are many types of ants called "carpenter ants". The real ones eat FAST - the others are more interested in the water - the wood gets eaten "in the way". Either way, no one wants them.

A bomb won't reach every hidden recess. You can also insert Diatomaecious Eart into all spaces - and certainly into areas you have open. It is a non-toxic, safe powder which kills and keeps on killing insect by cutting their bodies and causing them to dry out. Totally safe around humans and animal - get "food quality" DE - I but it on Ebay.

Insects track it back to nests - and eat dead ones with DE on them. You could also inject it through small holes and cracks.

I've finally tamed my 30 year invasion at home - the exterminators couldn't!
  • Just to double check, I'd call an exterminator for an opinion. If you have one that services your home regularly, that'd be the one. We had a fly problem that was bad enough on one trip that we were ready to invest in household flea/whatever bomb. DH thought maybe those awful looking fly strips would work. Tried it enroute and problem solved. Wonder if one of those stretched out near the problem area would do anything for your carpenter ants?? If you do decide to set off a fogger/bomb, remember that you're going to have to clean all surfaces before you use it again and remember to remove all food. Good luck.
  • Bombing wont do a thing. Hire a professional exterminator to spray for you before you close things up.
  • Evil, Evil, there big and they do bite. (one step below roaches)
I'd personally bomb it when you get a chance, make sure EVERYTHING is OFF. No flames, pilots, or power. One spark could go boom. There is a warning on the can, not to use it under so many square feet because it's very flamable. (ymmv, dangerous, etc.)

I've bombed several mobile homes using them, to the extreame, and they do work...just take precautions and air it out afterward. Some times you might have a lingering oder, where a frabreze or another deoderizer is needed. Remove all food or seal it up well.
  • yes, I would bomb the trailer. And we always when temp. stored or camping use home defender and spray around the trailer and any point the touches the ground (tires, stabilizer, AC wire, tv cables, front jack, water hose, etc.) as that is the highway in!
  • I can't comment on he bomb, never tried it in an RV. They make me nervous.

Kill as many as you can. Figure out how they are getting in. They like to nest in wood that is soft enough to dig through. Once the soft wood and nest is gone they may move on. They don't eat wood, so they need other food. Don't let them find food in your RV. I've only seen them in one RV and the RV was only a satellite party location. The real nest was nearby in a tree.

It is rumored that mixing sweets like sugar with poison can trick the ants into taking poison back to the nest. Be aware that the poison can be ingested by other animals (wood pecker, cat, ...)

Use ant traps if that is safe in your situation.
