Clearance lights now in the grill?

I don't think they're clearance lights if they are mounted in the grill?

Definitely not "clearance" lights.

If you are referring to Ford Raptors, it is a requirement per NHTSA Standard 108 since the front and rear of the Raptor is wider than 80 inches. If the rear of the truck is wider than 80 inches like a DRW is then you have to have no less than three red marker lights in the rear. This is why there were red lights on the tail gates of older DRW trucks before they start just adding three red light into the third break light. If the front of the truck is wider than 80 inches like the Raptor is, then you have to have three amber marker lights in the front.

If you see regular Ford trucks doing this then they are probably just doing it to make it look like a Raptor grille.

That's why duallies (and Quadrasteer Chevys) had cab clearance lights standard...the ID lights might be optional on newer Fords (like clearance lights are on SRW trucks). My F-350s (1979 and 1992) didn't have them, though my friend's 1997 F-250 does.

Yours is a largely a good post but, without wanting to be pedantic, I believe overall width at widest point is what dictates clearance/id lamps, not width front and rear. ie. if either the front or, more likely, the rear, is 80"+ then clearance lights are required both front and rear.

You are probably right. It is been a while since I have even looked in the NHTSA book since I do not deal with it at work any730hpmore. But if I remember correctly, the vehicles GVwR also comes into play especially if is under 10k.

Clearance lights are on the corners, identification lights are the ones in the center front and rear for over 80 inches wide vehicle. This does not include the skinny trucks that think it is cool.

Yes, clearance lights go at the widest point. ID lights (3 in a row) go front and rear. indicating you are approaching a wider vehicle or one is approaching you. this is why all trailers have ID and clearance lights.

The F-150 Raptor is the only Ford truck with factory clearance lights in the grill. The Super Duty trucks are an option and only on the roof.

There are aftermarket companies making grilles for ford trucks similar to th Raptor. It says FORD in the grille and comes with provisions to install Raptor lights. Some come with hem already in place.
