Converting power cable to detachable Marinco

My camper came with the attached power cable. It gets poked back in. It is a real bear when it's cold. I had the detachable cable on my 5th wheel and came to prefer it. The current cable is accessed from the 'service center' door and then the cable itself runs out the bottom through a mousehole style door.

I have purchased the Conversion kit but now I'm realizing that the door to close the electrical connection will have to close vertically. These are usually mounted to the side. The catch doesn't seem that strong, I wonder if it will hold against gravity enough to keep it closed.

Anyone already done the change?
  • I cut mine off , leaving about 5 feet inside , bought a new male and female end , put the male on the remainder inside and the female end on the 15 ft or so piece I cut off , now have a extention cord if I need it .
If you always use a extention cord along with the full length in the compartment your lowering your voltage , the longer you go , not so good if your using a smaller gen for AC

    +1
  • yeah I rarely pull it out either, I really don't even need the 30A. I'm tempted to maybe just hook up a 15A connection but want to make sure that I don't short change myself by not hooking up a 30A connector. I like the external connector though because I wouldn't even have to open the door to hookup.

I removed the microwave and the a/c seems to run fine on 15A even with the fridge on and converter charging so not sure I'd miss 30A.

The plug above the cord is to connect it to the onboard generator but I can't see every having that either since I have a portable gen.

I'd probably just put it all back to stock if it came time to sell it.

  • Can you put the connector on the outside or even the bottom of the camper someplace?
  • I've got the kit at home waiting to change it out. Iirc, the door kind of snaps shut, so I think you'll be fine. If not, seems like it would be pretty easy to modify somehow to keep it closed.
