Crew Cab or Regular Cab

I'am looking to get a New Ram 3500 dully to put ( most likely ) a Arctic Fox 990 TC, I wood like the shorter wheel base of the reg. cab plus it's $4000 less then the CC cab. I know they look odd with the over hang, but is there any drawl backs to the regular cab ? How are they in the rain or snow ? The CC cab is nice put I'am by myself an don't need all that much room, the back seat is mostly a junk collector, that's what the one I have now is. But if the CC cab handlers the camper better I will go with it. Thanks for your help.:)
  • I just wish Dodge would make a one ton single rear wheel reg. cab pick up

As JPF59 said they do. The catch is it is only available in the bottom Tradesman or SLT, neither of which have leather seats or all the other do-dads.

If you want 19.5" tires stock, check out the chassis cab. Would mean you would have to do something with the bed and the extra 4" in wheelbase.

The longer the wheel base the easier a vehicle will handle a load and the smoother the ride, all just plain physics. The longer wheelbase will reduce the chance of porposing. The longer wheelbase will also reduce the effect of the load from changing the weight on the front axle. If the COG is in front of the axle, more weight will be placed on the front axle of a short wheel base truck. If the COG is behind the axle, more weight will be removed.

So yes, a short wheel base truck will handle the camper just fine if it is within the payload capacity of the truck but at the cost of a slightly bouncier more bronco-ish ride.

However, it is only the wife and me but we still went with a CC. We put the grill, leveling blocks, chairs, umbrellas in the back seat. And we still have a place to throw out coats, snacks, and other misc items.
  • Hey, Diselburds they do make a 3500 srw reg. Cab pick- up, there just very hard to locate . I wood like to stay with the Cummins, and I do like the Ram truck body that comes with it ! I had a reg. cab trucks for 20 years before they had the CC's , some how I made do all that time. But the CC's are nice for all the other stuff that always ends up coming along. I think I'll test drive both an see how I feel about it.
  • One big limitation of DRW is the forced choice between a regular cab and a crew cab. I wanted the shorter cab as with the mega/double/super cab as the rear area is very useful for storing things I want to get to quickly without going into the camper or for things I can't put into the camper like an outboard motor or a trolling motor or fishing gear or a cooler.

I would go with SRW and 19.5 rims and tires if I needed the additional load capacity. DRW is not an option as the extra width and longer wheelbase makes these trucks a pain to drive and a pain to park and terrible for off pavement use.
  • Crew for added storage in the back seat. Also resale and trade in values will be better.
  • Are you set on Ram or would you consider a GM or Ford with the extended cab?
  • Regular cabs get cramped really fast. Add the fact you loose seat travel and back adjustment means no way for me.
  • If it is just yourself a regular cab is ok. But if dogs or a wife is involved with occupancy count definitely go crew cab.
  • I had Ford's Supercab before going to my Ram crew cab. We have dogs that take up the rear so a standard cab is not an option for us. You will find there is limited storage in a truck camper verses something you would tow. That extra space behind the cab may be handy for items you want keep out of the weather and not clutter the camper. With the extended cab, I had overhang that came just before the wipers when parked. I am tall and never had sight line issues, but that may be different in a standard cab or if you sit lower. Because the overhang will extend over your hood, you may have clearance issues with your radio antenna and reception may be worse. If you have built in GPS or satellite radio, expect to have to add or relocate your antenna to get a signal (the GPS antenna at the base of the windscreen on my extended cab was fine). I hear you about turning radius - The F550 Supercab option was a plus over our 5500 crew when we were deciding. We ended up going from less than a 20' truck to 23' plus the two additional feet of TC overhang on either.

    Dually
  • I guess I might be different than most, I think regular cabs look awesome. Short wheel base and better turning radius. You get the same size camper in a more manuverable package, with the ability to carry more weight from the lighter weight of a reg. cab vs. crew cab. I just wish Dodge would make a one ton single rear wheel reg. cab pick up.
