No fins and I actually have a gasket from RockAuto but everyone is telling me to use the silicone RTV.
The "Right Stuff" and silicone RTV are two totally different thing.
The "Right Stuff" is a very good sealer. Gaskets work too but mine seep after a while where the RS does not leak a drop........ever.
Yeah but will my local Napa have it? I've put this off enough so I don't want to wait for an order to get here. So if they have silicone RTV and not the Right Stuff that's what I'll be using.
I guarantee you NAPA and any other Auto Parts Store will have it. Lot's of different size and types of applicators. - agesilausExplorer III

I just pull the cover off, let it drain, wipe the housing edge off gasket, and the cover. Nut it back up. Then put the new gear oil back in out of a squirt bottle. Main thing, don't over engineer.
- Cummins12V98Explorer IIIThis squeeze bag works GREAT. No pump needed.

- Grit_dogNavigatorOnly took until the 2nd post to get off topic....
Shouldn't need a pump for the rear diff unless sway bar or something in the way. It's easy to squeeze out of the bottle. Not as much through a hose taped to the bottle, lol.
Unless you expect issues, IE existing damage to the cover, I'd not use any gasket maker on a rubber gasket. Light skin coat on a cork gasket. - dodge_guyExplorer IIIf yours has the finned aluminum factory cover I would get a live locker gasket. When I did my Excursion I installed the finned cover and used that gasket. They are reusable and mine never leaked. You will not have to spend time cleaning off the sealer!
- agesilausExplorer IIIThanks for all the replies, I'm off to get the right permatex.
I got the fluid as specified in the manual, no friction additive that's was for older models I think. And I have a little pump for the fluid and a 20V Dewalt impact wrench for all the bolts. - agesilausExplorer III

Permatex #2 on the cover. Leave the other side dry.
Is that the silicone stuff, a diesel mechanic told me that's what I need. Thanks for the reply
No friction additive that's for the older trucks I believe,
