DIY trailer tongue weighing

  • This device is homemade, using your own existing bottle jack. Its purpose becomes two fold. It is converted to a tongue weight scale and still can be used as its original purpose as a bottle jack lifting cars whatever. It costs about 15.00 to make in your shop and some DIY project time . A sherline is probably more than 100 bucks and has only one purpose. The large resolution gauge can be used for most all trailers or could be replaced easily with a different scale. FYI

It's an interesting method and I appreciate you showing it.
I think most people will opt for a more simple solution like buying a Sherline TW scale or use the bathroom scale method. But for those who like to tinker and have the means to do so, it's very interesting.
  • I think he would have got much better accuracy using a pressure gauge with a smaller range. Measuring 210 psi on a 3000 psi gauge reduces the precision quite a bit. I would have been more impressed had he used a 500 psi gauge, but perhaps he needs to weigh some much heavier trailer tongues. And perhaps, judging that his tongue weight is somewhere around 300 lbs. is all the accuracy he felt he needed.

His statement that 327# was about 10% of the 3,500# trailer weight concerned me a bit. My understanding is that 10% is a kind of minimum weight and 12% would be better. His tongue weight is closer to 9%. I must admit this is a clever technique, but I would tweak it a bit if I were going to use it.
  • very practical.....especially if a person was not near a truck scale
  • Ingenious (I guess). But I like to keep things as simple as possible. This seems like an awful lot of, "not simple."

Anyway, thanks for the link (video).
